The XTC and the Sherpa seem to fulfill similar roles as 26" wheel, derailleur bikes. Did the Sherpa replace the XTC or is it a different sort of bike (heavier duty for example) Any ideas?

Sherpa (original) was significantly heavier duty than XTC.

The XTC has a shorter wheelbase, shorter rearcend and was designed in theory for a sporty tourer.
The Sherpa was and still is, a good compromise as it’s a great bike to go camping touring and great for day rides!

Thanks for that John. It's an interesting concept but maybe not a load lugger - fast, lightweight riding along muddy tracks maybe. So it looks like I'll stick with 700c for that.

The Sherpa is the derailleur version of the Raven - essentially the same frame. They are true all-purpose touring bicycles, far more than just weekend tourers, and are capable of multi-month, self-supported, touring (based on the fact that my Raven has toured like that for most of the past two years). I'm no connoisseur of bicycles but I get the feeling my Raven rides better with a load on it.
