I've had an xTc since 2007 and its been brilliant for cycle camping holidays (rock solid with 25kg) and great for days out and 200km audax rides. I was contemplating an "audax" bike for longer events, probably the Thorn Audax Mk3R, but wash intrigued by this comment on page 58 of the Thorn Mega Brochure:
"In the year 2000, Fiona and I completed a very hilly 500Km Audax ride on our xTc machines. I was convinced that these lightweight 26" machines had many advantages over our 700c Audax bikes."
I'd be very pleased to hear from anyone who can expand on this comment or has experience of using an xTc on longer audax rides.
Thanks, Martin

Comfort is very important if spending many hours on the bike & IME - I do not ride at a faster average speed over a longer event and if I was uncomfortable on the bike I'd ride even slower ! Choose quality road biased 26" tyres run at a sensible pressure & aim to save time at the controls by eating / drinking on the bike.

Well I'm well pleased with my new audax can't beat the feel of a new bike go for it.

Thanks brummie for your comments. I'm definitely a comfort merchant. And thanks to jags, too. A new bike certainly does add something to the ride. I'll perhaps try a longer ride on my xTc and see how I get on. Thanks again.

I'm sure the "new" Thorn Audax models can be comfortable too ! - I just enjoy the benefits of "nice" 26" wheels - The XTC is a great bike !
