The most interesting development for me seems to be the conversion to use standard splined cogs. Not only does it make cog replacement far easier but it means I can easily buy replacements

Considering how long a Rohloff sprocket lasts, I'm not sure the ability to use splined sprockets is all that earth-shaking, Andy. Also it seems to me that the adaptor itself is a point of possible weakness and accelerated wear, and one has to wonder about whether it moves the chainline out further still, which most will consider undesirable.
Though I can see that our Ambassadors to the 'Stans like Matt will welcome the news: it could be rough sitting in the mud or the dust with your Rohloff sprocket tool and wondering where you will find an umpteen-millimetre open spanner to turn it. (It fits a Whitworth 3/4in spanner about half mile long and no heavier than a lead-tube bike, left over from the days when I turned old Bentleys into sports cars a la James Bond. Bet there are plenty of those in the 'Stans!)

I suppose we'll find out in the Fullness of Time, but it might still be an Awfully Good Idea to occasionally pull the adapter and put some new anti-seize on the threads to prevent galling to the hub threads.
At present, it looks a tremendously convenient upgrade for longer tours, and I am hoping the replacement adapter will be available separately at a reasonable price, as are the new-style "wave" shifter covers. Slotted cogs should be less expensive, as they will no longer require the four-start threading.

As someone who wasted a day bussing around in southern india searching for a bike shop that had, firstly a long enough chain whip, and secondly a strong enough mechanic, I'll be upgrading to this as soon as it's available. The threaded cogs on current Rohloffs have always been the system's only bugbear for me.
