I hadn't realised that there were 26" versions of the Mercury, I'd thought they were all 700c.

The vendor supplied the following additional information:

Serial number looks like K9 6091427. Top tube is 56cm, seat tube is 52cm.

Agree, think that must be a typo?

Doesn't seem a typo. 26' Mercuries were built in Bridgwater and the above seems to have been Kevin Sayles' work (K9 will probably turn out KS on closer inspection).

Thanks didn't know that.

No problem. Now I dug up a photo of a 26' Mercury that was available some time ago on SJSC pre-owned section, I think this particular one was owned by Robin Thorn. Seems like a nippy bike.

The 26" Mercury was basicly a Kevin handbuilt Sport Tour which existed long before the current Mercury model, depending on the customers riding style and intended use they were often a shorter wheelbase than a standard RST and often had custom fittings and 9/10 had an elaborate paint job.

We did the frame swap for this customer not so long ago, I can assure anyone of its provenance and good condition.

Hope this helps, Dave.
