Thank you kindly for the analysis.

What I know so far:  I tried for several days to install a Berthoud shifter with new cables, and I just couldn't get it right.  I put on the "old" original Rohloff shifter and steel inner cables, and bingo, works like a charm.

I took it out for a trial run of about ten miles yesterday, and the shifter works perfectly except it won't shift under a "fast" load.  If I back off, if shifts just fine.  It is quiet and runs more efficiently than my Shimano cassette.  I tend to think that I made the right decision with buying a used shifter and hub, i.e., I let the someone else do the breakin for me!  I'm real happy to be a member of the Rohloff club!
