Dan, Pete:

On the brake-fixing thingy for the click-stand -

This is what I use:  http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=65393&cat=2,43319,33283

QR rubber ties, cheap at a quarter each for the 4" items, very versatile

Might try your BikeBrake items, Dan--like the colour, but the price scares me a bit & they seem to do One Thing Only.

Cheers,

J.

Hi John!

Those quick-release rubber ties do indeed look useful for a number of chores -- I'm making a list now!  ;D Thanks.

Yes, the BikeBrake bands do seem to do fine so far, but only time will really tell how well they hold up under high-UV in the desert -- or if they stretch and become less effective. Since I got mine at half-price closeout on a bit of a lark, I don't have as much in them as I would at current prices. In hindsight, I wish I'd bought more. Hindsight is always 20/20 on bike buys. :-\ They show up on eBay sometimes.

Nuh-uh! The company's ad copy says they make a dandy money clip. ;) Hmm. Dunno if I'd want to try that or not, but it would be a way to store a spare BikeBrake among my touring credit cards, bills, etc in my wallet in my handlebar bag.

All the best,

Dan. (...who isn't completely sold on emoticons but uses them sometimes anyway)

Thanks, Dan.  The QR ties are a bit, er, agricultural in appearance, & might lower the tone of the neighbourhood a bit on Tom's handlebars, so to speak -- don't really complement Pete's stylish work very well.

Yes, I saw the money-clip function -- bit of a stretch, really, I think they'd be better off selling a brightly-coloured specialized device. (This, however, from someone who's never used a money-clip.)

But I have found the QR ties endlessly useful:  Three 4" ones served very well this past week as 3rd, 4th & 5th hands while I was rotating my front and rear tires--my Vittoria foldables simply refuse to stay seated unless I fix them to the rim immediately after I ease 18" of the tube inside.  (Once I have three QR ties at 12,  3, and 6 o'clock, the Vittorias shrug and submit, and I can complete mounting the tire.) The 8" ones will tension my tent vestibule doors nicely in a partly-open-still-protective position; and one on each piece of rain gear keeps that tightly rolled up.  The 12" ones do the same for my deflated & tightly folded Thermarest, and can also provide a good anchor on a tree branch if I need to extend a bungee when I rig a tarp.

One can/can keep the 4" QR ties on the handlebar, just under the brake hoods, and use one or two  of the rubber bands to lock the brake -- but your bar + tape has to be 4" in circumference; anything less and the QR tends to drift down the bar to freedom.  So, I usually keep the QR ties in a pocket.  (Keep them tucked away all over the bike & my person, in various lengths...)

Cheers,

J.

Velcro can be very handy stuff, Pete--I use similar sticky-bands to keep computer cables sort-of under control.

Have to be careful with it, though--some people are really hooked on it, others think it's a rip-off.  :-)

Wellllll, free men are free to choose their poison transport...  Reckon that "Tom" wd do just fine on that track, Pete, and you could look at the skies while you ride, without (re-)endangering your ribs.  And you prob wouldn't have to bother with shinpads either!  Glad you're better, though -- at a certain age, healing takes a bit longer.

Hi John

Yes I can look around with out coming off.

I today ordered a work/shopping bike, I'll have it set up to sell my Nuts on Saturday Morning Market in Taupo plus do my full weekly food shop!

I is designed that it can be build with a Rohloff Hub! But I'll be using all my cycle spares (only missing a Headset and outer Cables)

I love building up my bikes (and Unicycles)  8)

Pete  ;)
