Today I got asked if I would like to come along and ride on a new MTB track that opened on Friday.
I turned out to be a great ride and must be one of the top tracks in the North Island of New Zealand.
Here are a few photo's  ;)

My friends stopped at the 1st bridge

The river under the bridge at low flow

Along the track

Water Fall

Looking out across Lake Taupo

This is part of the New Cycle Tracks across New Zealand, part of a great cycle route to use when you all come to NZ to come cycle touring  :D

That looks fabulous Pete. You've whetted my appetite for a return trip to NZ. I was in the North Island two years ago, doing a bit of walking in the far north. Wonderful stuff. In fact for some reason I keep looking at houses in Ngunguru! Something is working at a subliminal level!

Any links to share re that cycle track?

Ian

Are these realistically trails that you could ride a loaded touring bike along? Or are they more of the MTB trails that NZ has a great deal of, but which you'd get seriously "hung up" trying to ride a Vivente World Randonneur 700C tourer loaded with 25kgs of camping gear and food?

Intrigued to find out more about the trails, their quality and the sort of scenery, features and facilities they include. I have toured a great deal in Australia but yet to get over to NZ. Going to Europe in 4 weeks and NZ is an overdue touring destination. Maybe next time.

My! What fabulous scenery and country, Pete. Like Il Padrone Pete, I'd be interested to hear how suitable those tracks are for loaded touring with conventional tourers and such. From what I can see in the photos, they look pretty viable -- I'll be right over!  ;)

Best,

Dan.

Hi Dan and Pete,
Yes the tracks are suitable for loaded touring bikes!
If your tyres are wider then 40mm x 700c or 2" x 26".......
A Thorn Nomad is great for all of the tracks in this network  :)
The book I posted about also lists back roads that join up this network, Which is a very good thing as New Zealand drivers Do Not like Cyclists  :-[ and a lot of main roads have No room to ride along on the side of the roads. I have a hard time at work driving a Big KW (Kenworth) truck with only 300mm (12") of room to play with (side of road to centre line - truck)
The main thing is to see the true beauty of New Zealand.
It is Not to be seen from the roads of NZ but the back roads and off road tracks (new cycle tracks of NZ)
So come on up to the top of the World and See New Zealand  8)

My brother lives in Auckland and has been going on about doing the Moerangi trail, which he's going off to do soon. It all looks fantastic.

Hi All,
Well I have got my 1st P.O.V  8) it's a Sony Action Cam (HDR-AS15).
I'm planning to show some of the great outdoors of New Zealand and it's Trial Network.
Been testing out some mounting ideas 1st.
