Summer 2013/14 Nomad ride in the Snowy Mountains
« on: August 04, 2014, 11:25:30 am »
Finally finished my crazyguy travelogue of last summer's 600km ride in Australia's Snowy Mountains. Very mountainous and much of it in National Parks and State Forests on dirt trails and roads.

The shot of the Comedians cycling out caught my eye as it look like they have a slab of cold ones on  a rear rack. Class ;)

God's Own Country. We should send them a little of our rain though, eh, Anto.

My favorite pic is the one of the wooden barn.

Where next, Sydney?

More of the same - I plan on a longer ride this summer but again in the Australian Alps. It's too convenient - out the front door and I'm there.

Thanks Jags. The only trouble I had was the front tire moving on the rim and shearing valves.

A weird one that, but after the fourth or fifth incident (all on long, steep dirt descents) I finally figured out that, on inflation, the slick plastic schwalbe rim tape was being gripped by the tire (Conti Top Contact) bead and was being pulled between the bead and rim wall. So under the harshest conditions consisting of heavy braking, heavily laden bike, heavy rider, steep descent, super hot rims and powdery dirt surface (grip, slide, grip, slide...) there was enough play for the tire to start rotating on the rim. Very frustrating as it meant I couldn't really enjoy the downhills, and indeed had to walk down some of the better ones as I was a long, long way from the nearest bike shop and was riding on tubes with some very dubious valve repairs.
