Title: External gear mech oil leak?
Post by: CSG on September 09, 2007, 04:22:25 pm
Hi Folks,

Have a Thorn Tandem with Rohloff / Hope disc brake combination.

I've noticed that there is oil seeping from the bottom of the external gear mechanism - is this just oil weeping from the hub? (The bike is always kept upright.)

The surface of the disc brake is very close to the bottom of the ext gear mech and I'm a little concerned about contaminating the surface of the disc.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Regards,

Colin

I've got an Enduro which has an external gear mech and I've never seen anything like that. If you take the mech off do you see oil coming from the mech or somewhere else?

Hi Peter,
Thx for your reply.
When I remove the external gear mech the oil seems to be coming from the inside. Not sure if this is coming down the cables (?) or from the hub.
I'm going to leave the mech off for a few days and see where it comes from.
Regards,
Colin

You might want to ask Thorn for advice if the hub is leaking. I vaguely remember that the design of the seals on old hubs has changed? The hub definitely shouldn't leak oil. Worst case is that you have to send the wheel to Rohloff to be fixed? Sounds bad - but their service is excellent and you probably won't have a problem after that.
