Title: Which way up
Post by: Rockymountain on November 25, 2013, 08:00:25 am
I'm just about to do my first oil change on my Nomad Mk2. I don't have a bike stand and so was going to tip the bike upside down to do the oil change (I have a Rohloff oil change kit). I know that this may be a silly question but does it matter which way up the bike is when doing the oil change. I'm guessing not.

Did anyone resolve the removing 25cc of air issue as well? Is it needed?

Thanks

Fraser

You're right. Doesn't matter.

The air business is to stop it spitting and being messy.

Fraser,

It does not matter which way you put the bike as the hub rotates, so there is no right way up for the hub.  I can't comment on the air, but what harm can it do to take the air out.

All the best.

Thank you both....I'm sure I'll get a stand at some stage. But at least my oil change won't have to wait for that.

I would pull the wheel out of the frame if that was simpler.

Why do you need a stand?

I have had Rohloff hub's for over 8 plus years.
Just add the cleaning oil and go for a good 20 to 150+ km ride  :o.

On coming home I just lean my bike up against the wall (in the Sun).
Drain my hub as per Rohloff and have a drink in the sun, light up the BBQ cook my dinner, eat  :P (time to Eat again)
Then refill as per Rohloff.
.
No biggie!

Have fun in the Sun, its the best time of year Summer :-)

No, no, no! You fellows lack the proper reverence towards fine German engineering.

First, you must do the oil change inside, in your drawing room, over your wife's best Persian carpet. That is the only proper milieu.

Next, the bike must be standing upright and you must perform the oil change standing on your knees beside it, facing Germany. That is the only proper attitude.

Magical incantations are free. But you'd better lift the bike when you turn the wheel, not just drag it against the carpet, or you'll be in the divorce courts. And you'd better pull out the 25ml of air or the thing will spit all over the carpet, result ditto.

Then you must take a ceremonious ride along the most beautiful avenue of trees you know. I mean, leaving the bike standing, draining, against the wall of a pub! It could only happen Down Under*.

Yah, das ist sehr funny, yah.

Be careful what you wish for Andre. Am in Newman, Australia, working and the nights drop to 32C while the days are in the 40's.

Seriously, give me this anytime, over what you people in the Empire call weather.

I know. I stayed with the manager at Newman while I visited the Hickman Crater, on my tour around Australia back when I first went to live there; it was a tiny place then, not even a hotel. Such temps would probably kill me now if I tried to cycle in it, even at night. I had in mind Melbourne, or even Adelaide, both of which I lived in for several years.
