Title: Zefal HPX2 pump wanted
Post by: jomouk on October 23, 2014, 07:13:08 pm
I am currently renovating my Thorn Nomad Mk1.  So far, so good!  But I would like to replace the pump, which is a bit battered.  I am looking for a Zefal HPX 2 frame fitting pump in black - the old style, all black version, not the new one with a silver barrel.

Well, OK - if you do, the big question is - would you like to sell it? :)

Feel for you, while I like silver components in general, black Zefal pumps looked soooo much better!

One thing that may be worth checking before you buy one is the size of it. As far as I remember, Zefal pumps came/come in 5 different sizes and also the braze-ons on Thorn frames might be different sizes too (they certainly are different on Raven Mk1 frames, and I think the same was true for XTC). Good luck with it!

Satin-black spray paint, perhaps?

Astonishingly, that's what made my Zéfal HPXs black, when comparing them to the silver versions. Came from the factory that way. A bit of Scotchbrite pad to give the silver shaft some "tooth", paint, and you're there.

I'd thought them anodized* but nope; mine were all painted, and by Zéfal.

Best,

Dan.

EDIT: The older silver ones were anodized. I think the more recent ones are polished, but haven't seen one up close.

Oh dear, I thought HPX2 was a model and not size... Sorry to have stated the obvious.  :-[

ah now you must be pumping it for a week.i'd safely say the most pressure you can get is 40psi,ok good enough to get you home but no way in the world can you pump it up to 80psi with a zefal unless your on EPO  ::)

Anto,

I um, well, I've managed to get 125psi out of an HPX and into tubies pretty regularly and used to from my Silcas with the Campy steel heads. I say "used to" 'cos the styrene plastic has dried out after 35 years on the Silcas and they tend to "explode" (i.e. develop rapid longitudinal cracks with shrapnel) when they reach that pressure now, so some are kept for "pretty" on the vintage bikes and a mini-pump does actual pump duties.  I did use my Crank Brothers Power Pump mini on the Nomad the other day and on the blue Rando bike. Depending on tire volume and how flat the tire, it takes between 300 and 600 strokes, but it'll do it! Worked fine on AndyBG's RavenTour in Europe this summer, and stores in my underseat bag.

Eat your porridge! ;)

Of course, something like a Topeak Morpho that converts into a floor pump would make a quick and easy job of it, but where's the fun in that?

All the best,

Dan. (...who really doesn't have gorilla arms, just an excess of determination when wielding a tire pump :P )

The two pumps I have for my road toolkits will do 80psi, but I don't need pressures that high on my Thorns. I have one of the Lezyne mini-pumps with an old-fashioned flexible hose connector - that gets my Brompton tyres up to 85 psi and has been lent to "racing" cyclists to inflate their 700C x 23 tyres up to high enough pressures to get them home. Downside is it needs a lot of pump strokes for fat tyres or very high pressures.

For long trips I have a more sophisticated and heavier Lezyne pump, with built-in pressure guage that (sort of) works like a floor pump. This is more comfortable for inflating 26" x 50 mm tyres. I used that on my Spain trip, but I will probably take the smaller pump next time as I get very few punctures on 26" tyres and am now on butyl tubes that need less topping-up than the latex ones I used until recently.

Both pumps in my road toolkits are less convenient than the old German track pump I keep in the garage, so they tend to get more use on other peoples's bikes than on my own...

Painting was my fall back, but I am intrigued by the idea of heat shrink now!
