Title: Thorn XTC 490S wanted...for buying and can (part)swap for a 525L too :)
Post by: JWestland on January 31, 2013, 02:42:39 pm: I do love the XTC I got from e-bay but it's too big, yes it kinda works, but it's winging it. Clumsy sellers eh only measuring seat tube...well at least it got me in the Thorn fanclub :)

The issue is really the top tube length at 555 VT. I need about 510VT which means a 490S size.

SJS has some frames left, but no 490S. An eXp which they have is a different beast than the XTC and more ponderous with less clearance, whereas I like that clearance for the bad days on ungritted roads. The XTC really can do it all if it has to. Very few bikes are like that.

So, on the very very unlikely chance somebody has an XTC for sale that fits, or a frame only, which can be in poor paint condition as long as it has no bad dents, or knows somebody that wants to do swapsies/sell...here's my ad :)
(Or SJS if you have a trade-in...you know where to find me ^_^)

jawine you will be blessed if you can get a swap, your only hope is to buy a new frame and be done with it you know it makes sense.
ME well i'm a magpie when i see something i want i pull out all the stops to get it beg borrow.. put the crying act on crawl if i have to but that frame WILL BE MINE .
just order the new baby from sjs then your committed to getting the money and good luck. ;)

The bike is about 6 years old, in reasonable condition (paintwork a bit scratched in places), red, straight handlebars, some bits are Shimano XT............if you are interested in the bike I will firm up on all these details.

Cost - £650 complete*
* Unless collected you would have to arrange courier

Unfortunately it's a 455S which is too small for me.

JenM hope you get a good sale as it's a lovely bike. Check CTC forums too, you see ads every now and there specifically for small touring bikes.

That's a 52.5 or 50.5 Virtual Top Tube in old money. I have a 525L with 55.5 VT I can swap for.

The top tube is too long again...a 525L may work but 490S ideal. The joys of long legs and a short torso...

Post by: macspud on December 29, 2013, 07:34:42 pm: Surely the 490L would fit better than tha 525L? With the 490L the seat tube is the same as the 490S and the virtual top tube is 30mm longer than the 490S, as opposed to the 525L with 35mm longer seat tube and 50mm longer virtual top tube.

i really don't mind a centermiter to big or small i could adjust reach with stem/ saddle ,I'll make it fit in other words. ;)problem might be heal clearence ::)

SJS reckons i need a 52.5 S/M when i gave them my measurements for the Audax.

Go for it then it's a lovely comfy frame you won't regret it ^_^

I had a look but a 50 cm ST (per seller) means it's a 560S or 560L... :/

490S/525S are the proverbial hen's teeth, however the 525L behaved fine in Scotland even with a short stem on gravelly roads, I guess me and him are just meant to be together?
