Title: Thorns I have owned
Post by: bobs on January 12, 2017, 09:43:28 am
Looking through my old photographs here are some  photos of the Thorns I have owned over the last 10 years.
The second  is a RST which was to big for me but was bought as a donor bike to strip all the parts off to put on to a smaller Raven frame.  All good bikes none better than the other, just different.
The Rolhoff has been on 4 different Thorns and 1 Surly Troll. You wouldn't try that with a derailleur .

You've a great collection there! All look in excellent condition. I like the way you've taken the nomad into a shop, or is it a station?!

What a fantastic collection of Thorns over the years, Bob! A real treat to see! All beautifully turned out and a real testimony to your setup and maintenance skills.

It would be nice to have other multi-Thorn owners add to this thread so some comparisons can be made wrt riding qualities, load-carrying capacities, etc. I know AndyBG has had experience with multiple Thorns over the years, same for Leftpoole John...anyone else? The title is perfect to carry forward and comparisons would greatly help prospective owners.

Thanks for sharing, Bob.

All the best,

Dan.

I've owned two Thorns, thus far. Although having moved them on for good reasons I can't quite press the delete button on the many photos I have. Now, this is either a form of fetishism, totemism or simply a burgeoning need to buy another Thorn, #Gameone 😊☺

It was taken outside Boots at Newcastle Station getting food for the ferry to Amsterdam.

I am just a beginner with 2 Thorns, but here they are.

First an eXp which I cycle camped from Edinburgh to Ravenglass on the west coast of the Lake District with a couple of sons.

Second an eXpr which I cycle camped from Edinburgh to Aberdeen for the Grampian Rally. I joined up with a friend a few miles further on for the rest of the trip up the east coast.

Ŕpart from the Sherpa  which I sold complete, I usually buy a new frame and then transfer all the parts across. Everything has fitted no problem. I then sell the old frame.

No all frames have been great. Just change for changes sake. Just enjoy building up bikes, I'm not alone there.

There is no real difference in the ride. The top tube slopes slightly which i prefer also its designed for an Ex box.

I built up my 2016 Raven Sport Tour frame as a fairly light road-going bike with Rohloff hub and drop bars:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/M5OGifcYUuKdZAchiKel4zNY5P97YUbPcMZgpDTRSP1ECPsTZar7PUvv7qPDGeqTK-lIkBd5LLJ0cQlxC4UTBexsRbTKZK9qTtxFN0G_zp6Dm0XhFxxG_5eGNe4p9BWcKyowJ-jA70kNGsCNGTBSz1iMkiVS0DGvqg8eDyFdil3-jLK6AM-T6NGyzViqDohhRWpcMxTNiBz85Kgja-BF1BIyYYdEyT1iP8MJ28O9Mk5XinEhAgttHumhrvImjVIedGbsKX9PJxt8ARdKF7IUTeYrVqKR4f-YH7viVluB4aZQ2bS56My008Hm278bQFuEVwc388bM5spgZsq1okQ9-PysOv-pRWdRNGlouF8SgnU-ykrbpP6AZG10egPioGDhdMTQSQqrzsPxCQGryAe88M91E3XphO9a3PayHsIxKp1VquvsFWP-MQwvTE-rxsFWaT3FVXYnnVCJ-VAXGEGE8feod9-Fvteib2yugYiCApyqfu2FJdvqfYOi_O8tqbBHLgd0zW9gQGxJXpucRg_Fy1A2SkcNN3siTGa9Gu75PnjY_MmJg5aOY3DR6VJRUBmQCjZOMfrCWB2zPj-9FXGW5z4L3FFWetBc8Hnn_DNbn51CTounkPkq=w800-h600-no)
to replace my 1977 lightweight 700C tourer. No photos of the latter, it is currently in bits for a major overhaul.

I still have the old bikes. The old steel mountain-bike is now used as a "visitor bike", with sit-up-and-beg bars and a 7-speed hub gear.

I often take my old 5-speed hub geared 650B to work, where I use it on paths and other moderate off-road situations for survey work. No qualms about locking and leaving it.

When I have finished the overhaul I shall probably keep the 700C tourer for occasional use in good weather, it is the only pure derailleur bike I have left (one of the Bromptons has a two-speed derailleur combined with a 5-speed hub gear).

There is another "visitor bike", a lady's frame with sit-up-and-beg bars and a 3-speed hub gear.

In addition to that lot, I also have two Bromptons, one used very regularly for train-assisted commuting, the other used for longer tours when I combine cycling with other transport.

My wife has a lady's frame 650B bike with sit-up-and-beg bars and an 8-speed hub gear, plus a Brompton.

And, finally, my old two-wheel trailer.

So a total of 11 bikes and a trailer in the family, but no car, though I do hire cars and vans when necessary.
