Early/late New Year's wishes everyone's way from Out West, where I'm about 8 hours behind most of you, 9-10 behind others, and a whopping 19-22 hours or so behind those in Australia and New Zealand (including the one hour daylight-savings time you're enjoying in summer!).
Nice to have "advance scouts" to to give me a heads-up on what lies ahead; thanks! :D
Happy New Year to All! Happy 2014!
All the best,
Dan. (...who resolves to get more sleep this year)

Best wishes to all, and all your families, in the coming year.
An old Irish blessing, adapted for those who live life on 2 wheels:
'May soft breezes caress your cheek,
And the gentle sun warm your back.
May the passing rains refresh you,
And the beckoning road not rise up to meet you.'

Off to open the champagne early... I'll raise a glass to all my pedal pals, real and virtual (that's you guys on the forum here), for entertainment, companionship and motivation. And to the bike, which my physician says is what keeps me alive. Amen!

Good for your doc, Andre, and for your bike. And especially for you!! Viva!!

Happy New Year, everyone!
It's 2014 already here in Oz, but it's 15 minutes to go in the UK and Ireland, and Dan's much further behind! ;) (Hey Dan, for a small fee, I can tell you who won the Superbowl before it's played ;D)
We watched the fireworks from a friend's pad on Sydney Harbour last night - spectacular once again! The head's a bit thick this morning, but a greasy breakfast should sort that out.
My friends, wherever you are in the world, may you have a happy, healthy and safe 2014!
Mr and Mrs Slammin!

Happy & Healthy New Year everyone!

This I like, Sam! I'll use the knowledge to place a big, winning bet and then split the proceeds with you evenly.
:D
All the best,
Dan. (...who thinks this may be the next best thing to a Time Machine)

Back in Texas and a little late getting on (9pm central 01-01=14). Got a feeling it is going to be a great year. Not one wreck seen between Picher Creek, AB, Idaho Falls, ID, and here (Childress, TX). That is over New Years Eve and Day!
Dan I am with you, how did we get to be last? I smell a conspiracy! Actually, I am two hours ahead of you, so I guess you are last. ;D
Andre, I hope that bike lives forever. Are you sure the virtual friends didn't appear after the champagne was consumed?
Poor Pete, down up there frying his brains out on the day after!
Jags, thanks for the thread.
Wish everyone the best year ever!

And I hope I'm not too late to add my New Year greetings for everyone.
Yesterday being New Years Day I had a cycle ride which was, sort of, symbolic. I have already booked in for an endurance ride in June and this year I'm concentrating more on cycling (instead of running), so I thought it was a great way of starting the New Year off.
Complete with a sniffy and runny nose I set off for a short 7.5 miles bike ride. Talk about raining cats & dogs! The first leg of the ride was into the wind and I can tell you it was horizontal rain, stinging my face. I was leaning forward, as if I were racing and I'm sure if I'd slowed down I would have instantly stopped and get blown back home straight away. Cars splashed through puddles and it was almost as if someone was standing throwing buckets of water at me - BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
I went on to climb a couple of hundred feet and then out on to an escarpment where the wind was behind me. I cruised along a level stretch of road, probably for about half a mile and without hardly any effort maintained 35mph before going even faster on a downhill swoop towards our home.
That was fun! I was grinning ear to ear when I got home. Although only a short ride it was enough to feel so very much alive and as it I'd had a decent ride and a brilliant way to start the New Year.
Best wishes to everyone.

Not at all, Doug!Complete with a sniffy and runny nose I set off...
'Hope those are better t'day....if I'd slowed down I would have instantly stopped and get blown back home straight away. Cars splashed through puddles and it was almost as if someone was standing throwing buckets of water at me - BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
Yay! Proof-positive, the best tool in the kit is a good attitude. Such conditions are what one makes of them....grinning ear to ear when I got home. Although only a short ride it was enough to feel so very much alive...
Yeah! Wonderful start to the New Year, Doug, good on ya!
(Glad you made it home safe and sound, Tom)
(Agreed with Gareth on pics and more pics!)
Best,
Dan.

Andre, I hope that bike lives forever.
Last year was the first time that I didn't make a shortlist of bikes and spend some time considering which I should treat myself to. The reason is that in the last five or six years, my shortlist was the same three bikes each year, one of which I already have but just in a different color, which tells you how desperate I was becoming.
The truth is, I have the best bike for my purposes; it was excellent to start with, and now I've further developed it to a most pleasing state of refinement and utility, with very little left that I can do (perhaps a new seat post, because the Brooks saddle clip is such rubbish), so I'm getting a bit bored. Idle hands, my granny used to say, are the devil's ear cushion. (Don't ask me, I'm just telling you what she said.)
So I stopped wasting time evaluating bikes in detail to arrive at the same old shortlist.
A positive view on this is that I already own the best bike I have ever owned or will ever own, and should concentrate on riding it.

"The truth is, I have the best bike for my purposes"
Yes, all the bike on your blog are exceptional.
"Idle hands, my granny used to say, are the devil's ear cushion."
Mine used to say that idle hands drew a glance and smile from the devil.
I lived with my mother's parents in my early childhood. This was in south eastern Oklahoma, and every Saturday we would all pile into a cargo wagon drawn by a brace of mules (named after granddad's two son inlaws) and head to town to restock staples. This trip took several hours each way and was well dark by the time we got home. On the way back, myself and a very young aunt (we were 3 or 4 years) would be horsing around and be making a lot of noise. Grannie would draw us close and tell us about an ungodly monster with long bloody teeth and claws which perched itself on the low lying tree branches over the road. Whenever it heard a child, it would swoop down and grab the child so as to have something to eat later. Needless to say each of us would try to out silence and get lower than the other. Child psychology, it works! And no worrrrsssse ffforrr wear!

I think they meant to say the same thing!
