Hi, As many of you know the Raven Tour, Raven Sport Tour and Sterling are no longer produced. Because of these we are letting our test fleet go.
All have just been oil changed and serviced, most have brand new or month old at the most tyres, and new cables and saddles.
These bikes are done about 1000 miles through the pedals but have been driven all round the country to various expo's demos etc so have more scratches than you would otherwise get in a 1000 miles of riding probably consistant with 3 years regular use.
All are sold with 90 day parts warranty and lifetime frame warranty. Before they get properly photographed i'm offering them on the Forum and Facebook for £1299.99 each (they all roughly have a retail of £2100+) which is a bargain, they will remain at this price for 1 week (until 07/01/2013) should they not sell we will photgraph and list properly on SJSC and the prices will have to increase slightly. I took the pics below on my phone zoom in for the spec or contact me.
So bag yourself a bargain! Any queries etc e-mail me dave.whittle@thorncycles.co.uk or call me 01278441542, all bikes must be paid for an shipped/collected within 7 days. £100 deposit secures any bike.
Up for grabs (what you see is what you get):
Sterling MTB Spec 590M/L Green

Argh! my wallet keeps trying to get out!
I really fancy that Thorn Raven Tour 537L Black, can anyone advise if the size would be ok.
I am a smidge under 6ft with standard dimensions (If there is such a thing).
Ian
-
Depends on leg length really most people 6ft ish have a 562L, we sold that one between xmas and new year... the Sterling would fit you though ;)
-
Thanks for the reply Dave,
Ye I kinda figured it might be on the small side, I have 31 inside leg but to be honest I like a big bike under me rather than one on the small side.
The Sterling is indeed a lovely bike but I am planning a long tour, certainly through Europe and maybe through Africa so the Sterling woudn't be suitable.
If money were no object I would have both ;p
Ian

Hi Ian, I have the 537L raven tour and I'm only about 1.75m. To be honesty think it would be too small for someone of 6ft.
Dave,
Shocked that thorn are stopping production of the Tour! Interested to know what replaces it in the range? I guess it would be the nomad but at a different price point?

The Raven Tour has been replaced with the Raven with an ST1 fork, the Raven Sport tour by the Raven with a C2 853 Fork.

could the forks be changed on that sterling ,lovely bike IAN ;)

Sorry no, all we are trying to do is recover some of the costs of making these bikes in the first place and make some space, there is no margin for px's, however you could use our eBay sales scheme in conjunction.

thanks but i'll hold on to my lovely sherpa,
nice bike that raven emmm 8)

Aaaaargggh dilemma! that Sterling keeps winking at me. Buy me! buy me! buy me! it says. Sounds like a Bonnie Tyler cue this but: "I'm holding out for a Nomad"

Nice one John :)
You are now committed to telling us all about your travels.. ;)
Ian

All congratulations, John! Well done! Now, your long search is over and the enjoyment will soon begin. "Second" on Ian's call for ride reports once it is in your hands and under you.
Very nice outcome, indeed, having it end up with one of "us". Best wishes for many happy miles on it!
Best,
Dan. (...always nice, keeping it "in the family", so to speak)

I have to agree with Dave regarding how to buy a Thorn. Buying one of these bargains even though it's not your size is the way to go.
Finding a good secondhand Rohloff bike in your size is difficult. I bought a frame which was my size first and then bought the first good bike which came along, the size didn't matter. Swapped everthing across and then sold the frame. Very happy with the outcome.

Hello,
Thank you all.
The great thing about this, is that I was looking for an Audax bike. I used to own a Thorn Audax 853 which was sold along with a Sherpa and a Winter and a Summer Club Tour! I was seriously ill and Hospital told me no more riding. I was devastated and slowly but surely with determination and previous fitness, convinced the medics to give cycling a chance. They told me ok but 5 miles maximum! My first ride earlier this year by Brompton was of course slightly longer. I did 20 at first attempt.
I have since then built a Club Tour and now have the Raven Sport coming soon. The Raven will be my day rides bike and will enable sea front sand strewn rides across to Swanage. I dare not with my Brompton nor Club Tour because of the sand.
Fortunately Bob this Raven Tour is my size and no need to swap things or purchase more. I am now very poor as having moved house this year it cost so much and the house needs loads of work. I am now on a back burner for some time.
I am retired early because of my health and have a standard state pension with no extras!
Thank you all once again.
Best regards,
John

Hello,
Thanks for the comments. To put things into perspective, so that you can look up the medical side of things, here goes!
I suffer with Pulmonary embolisms in multiples. I have been in Hospital many times the past 4 years. At one stage my wife was told that I may die. I was so close to death I was asked if I wished the Padre to come. I take a multitude of medicens and inject myself daily with blood clot, busting drugs. I am enjoying my life as it comes. one set of embolisms damaged my left lung. One time my right heart ventricle was so enlarged I was placed flat and not allowed to even sit up in bed for three days. This Was because the clots had blocked my heart and the ventricle was pumping so hard it nearly burst. I am a stubborn mule and every morning when I wake, is another day to enjoy because I am alive!
Make the most of your lives as when your body fails you it could be too late.
Happy cycling during coming and many more years.
Best regards,
John

Well John, if that isnt a motivation for everyone to get out there and do stuff, nothing is.
Happy cycling this Year and many more Years to come.

Hi, quick update, my records wern't correct the 512L we had listed turns out to be a 487L!! ooops. Looks like i'm not going to have time to do anything until, the end of this week so will extend the offer until 14/01/2013. This isn't the DFS sale though that will be the deadline before they get listed and photograped on sjscycles.co.uk probably for a good £50-100 more than they are currently offered for.
Have a great week, Dave.

Hello!
Mine has arrived. I have fitted pedals etc and I am out for a ride soon.
Good points are:- It is hardly marked and it is really lightweight.
Bad points are:- Newish rear wheel, pretty worn front. Mudguard at rear needs replacing. No pump fitting pegs!!!
See you later,
John

Ride safe and have fun on the new bike

Hello,
I have just ridden almost 30 miles on the bike. Result! Lightweight, lively and fast too.
Uploading pictures to Members bikes soon.
-
Congratulations, John; may you enjoy many happy miles together!
As for the pump peg...don't forget the Zefal nylon pump peg and/or Doohicki. These do wonders for fitting a frame-fit pump behind the seat tube if you wish.
Best,
Dan. (...who is very much looking forward to photos and future ride reports; John's bikes are always very nicely turned-out)

New rear rim was fitted (this is a bad point??) as the other had a dent on the sidewall, front has plenty of life left, mudguard was a bit twisted but fully functional, Sport Tours didn't have pump pegs, on sporty bikes Andy figured people would have a mini pump.

Dave,
Rear wheel is a good point!
Re no pump pegs, it is that one gets usedv to Thorn bikes with them rather than without! Extra expense for a tiny pump to be carried in saddlebag.
Neither point was a complaint, merely observation/feedback.
Overall very happy. Needs shaped bars though as these straight ones are not to my liking at all. The grips and bar ends however are very comfortable.

Glad your happy John.
Only the Sterling left now people, he's looking very lonely :( good home wanted ;)
