First oil change on a Rohloff?
« on: October 28, 2006, 09:52:29 am »
Sorry to seem thick, but I'm sure I saw somewhere that the first oil change on the Rohloff hub should be at 1500km/1000miles - or am I imagining things?  It's just that I'm at that point now and need to make sure.

Thanks in anticipation for your words of wisdom.

Jim

Can't say I have ever seen this info. p 87 of the service manual says
quote:
An oil change should be annually carried out or at least every 5000km.
The Thorn web site says the same.

On the advise of a friend who has broken in three hubs, I did my first oil change after the initial 1,000 miles running in period.  It made an instant difference, making it quieter and smoother, I’ve no idea why. It’s obviously not necessary for the wellbeing of the hub, or it would be in the manual, but I’m glad I did it.

I too believe there is an improvement in the hub after every oil change.

PH - I first read you post as - 'On the advice of a friend who has broken three hubs' - I was getting a little worried!

It is a good argument for getting the large cans of flushing oil and hub oil.  You pay £60 for more than you'll probably ever use and can then afford to change it whenever you want... I changed mine early the first time, before a tour and as part of a winter service, although not necessary it can't do any harm.
