Thanks for the thoughts, Jags.
Me too. I don't feel 60 and that kinda makes it worse. I know I can do it but I know the clock is ticking.

When I ride my Thorn, the years fall away. It's such a great fit and ride that I have no worries and can enjoy the scenery etc.

I must talk things over seriously with Mrs. Matt and come up with an idea that is agreeable to both of us. Somehow I don't think she will go with the open ended, ride until either the money runs out or the wheels fall off, idea.

Maybe agree for her to fly out when I am a good distance and at the, as yet to be decided, half way point?
She's not a cyclist but knows how much I enjoy it.

matt what had you in mind as regards a tour.

Fly from UK in April to Turkey.
Bike East through Iran into the 'stans and then China.
Or Iran UAE Oman and fly to India then Nepal.
If China... then down through Vietnam and then Oz or New Zealand.

A flying start would be good weather wise to get me onto the Pamir Highway before the snow of September/October.

Any thoughts on timing and weather constraints?

A definition:  virtual; 3. Of something that is simulated in a computer or on-line.

All I want for Christmas is a bike (Thorn Nomad) that I can actually sit on.  You guys would really be impressed with it!

It would look like Dan's.
Have Andre's Chainglider and tires (or, maybe Smart Sams).
Its' rider (me) would have the courage to bike some of Pete's trails.
It would have Matt's bell.  (With "Matt" of "Matt's Old Bird" scratched out and replaced with "Tom".)
It would have all of Jags old gear mounted, plus front panniers.
Its' rider (again me) would have Frank's determination and financial genius.
Its' rider (...) would have JimK,s common sense and impressive mathematical abilities.
Its' rider would have Dan's limitless knowledge of all things mechanical.
Its' rider would write such moving touring journals and write with such a flare that Andre would turn green with envy, and go into an Irish gloom...for a full ten minutes.  Heh, Heh.
I would be riding and touring with Dan, Jimk, Matt, Jags, John, the good Doctor:  Frog Prince, Richie, Slamming Sammy (love that handle), all one hundred Ians, Pete, el Padrone, honesty, andybe, fisher, macspud, horizon, phopwood, JWestland, revelo. etc., etc...
I would ride to Andre's pub (down the street), and eat the sandwich he once described.  And get him to show me the difference between beer and ale.  And also why you guys don't re-fridgerate your beer (am I out dated on that).

Anyway that is what I want.  Just a couple of bills and a wife to get around.  Call me the Jags of the West.

Can anybody tell that I am sitting in a Montana truck stop parking lot on Christmas day with absolutely nothing to do?

Hope everybody got what they wanted and it was not a virtual present!

Merry, Merry, Tom

hah brilliant post another wordsmith on the forum great stuff.
my son has inlaws in bozeman montana what a country  so feckin big, i cant get me little brain around it.love to tour  yellowstone pk with out front panniers  ;D
next time round i'll be using as much lightweigh gear as i can to keep weight and bulk  down.
so my choice ain't going to be a Nomad its either the Clubtour, i hate that name where did they come up with that seriously need to change it. or maybe there Audax depends on what dosh i can muster without the wife finding out where i hid it. ::)

anyway Tom i'de be well impressed if you put such a bike together CLASS ;)

anto.

Dan,

Thanks

Jags,

I am in Billings, MT now, only 140 miles east of Bozeman.  Your right, Montana is one big (and beautiful state).  I too love the Club Tour.  For a long time it was my favorite of the Thorns.  I think it is the best all round bike they make.  It still might be my choice!  I like them in this order,  Club Tour (who I think they got the name just right), the Nomad then the Tour.  The last two for the Rohloff.  The nephew (like a son), needed extensive dental work done, or I would have already been a real owner (vs. virtual).  I, like you, are secreting the pennies in what I hope is a safe place.

I got a kick when you and Matt were talking about being 60.  Youngsters, God bless them!

Here is one for you:

Matt:  In my day when we went to school we had to walk five miles in the snow!
Jags:  Well, we did too only we had to walk it barefooted!
Tom:  What, you guys had feet?

good on ya Tom i just spilled a mouthfull of coffee over the keyboard laughing at that last bit. ;D ;D ;D

yes the clubtour is growing on me right enough, my sherpa was a great bike but it climbed like a dog just to heavey up front IMHO.  i hated the feel of it with front panniers, but  having said that i come from a lightweight bikes background only into touring maybe 7or8 years still a novice.but solid as a rock otherwise.
next year if all goes well i'll buy the either the tour or audax and travel to parts of ireland ive never been before, maybe head over to galway  more or less a straight spin across  the country 200 miles or so i live on the north east coast .but thats a dream at the moment have to get the bike first i have everything else even though i sold all my good gear  ::)
matt's dream is much bigger that mine more an epic, but i'm only a little fella who can just about read and write, no sense of direction ,stone broke but i'm not complaining i got this far maybe the next few years will be that bit easier. ;D
