Sram 1 X 11 (XX1 and XO1)
« on: October 12, 2013, 10:38:59 am »
Hi All
Has anyone tired out the new Sram XX1 or newer XO1 groupset?
His is the new XO1 Groupset on my New Bike that I have on Order (Yes Dan Sorry it's not a new Thorn!)

The rear cassette is 10 to 42T and you can run 30 to 38T front chainring! only one shifter  :D

It would look good on a Thorn Touring Bike  ;D

I've had bikes with 1 x 7 and 1 x 8, they had a tendancy to drop the chain when shifting at the rear. I imagine an 11 would be worse.

A front derailleur prevents this from happening, I would fit something similar (chain guide) or, another method I used was a bash plate slightly larger than the chainriong and mounted outboard, which was sufficient to prevent this.

Looks great, but £1000 for the groupset!  £300 for a new cassette!

Nice bike and set up for mountain biking..... But..... For a touring bike I would worry about thin narrowly spaced sprockets, lots of wheel dish, narrow chains and the consequences of all this in terms of wear and reliability.

Lovely bike and fascinating new groupset, Pete. I will be interested to see how things wear over time with the chainline at the extremes.

This is the same basic concept as a single-shifter, single-chaining, wide-range IGH...but with derailleurs.

Pete...a question: Will you be modeling the fit of your new bike after the changes you made on your Nomad, Tom? How have those changes worked out for you on Tom? Are you now riding pain-free?

Best,

Dan. (...who thinks Pete will soon be ripping the faster trail sections and descents)

As I understand it the biggest problem I could see would be that it does not fit the standard 11 speed hub mount thingy and not many hubs are available with the specialist part

Hi All
I'll get back to you all tonight about this groupset.

A few things to know chain Will Not Come Off Chain Ring!

Rohloff will not fit a lot of new MTB's! because of new axle STD 142 x 12mm!!

I asked Head Designer from Sram about new Sram Gear Hubs? and Rohloff and the answer was no way because all the new axle STD's coming out would make it to hard. A cool guy and leaned a lot about new thinks coming out in 2014/2015!
It was a Sram night to show us about how to repair new forks, adjust new gear set up etc....

Pete.....

Hi All,
Right at the Sram night I leaned that there is a plan to make this 1 by 11 groupset more then for just Mountain Bikes. They are looking into cycle touring, City Bikes, Tri Bikes, and road cycling?

I'll up date this more in 24 hours as its been a long Day...

Pete.

Hi All, Right here we go....

How this is a photo front the inside of cranks! 1st look at how the chain ring is so easy to charge over (to charge size of ring in min's), You also see how tall the teeth are and that the teeth are timed with the chain! Rings come in 28T to 38T in two teeth sizes.

New cassette and XD freehub desgin (which is being made by a number of hub makers like "Hope") this cassette comes in one size only 10T to 42T  8)

This is how the Cassette is made! loads of time (over 3 hours each) and this costed money!

If you look closely you will note that this is of the same design as Derailleurs from the 1950's but up dated with a ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH technology this reduces bounce and chain slap.

Here is more for you to read http://reviews.mtbr.com/sram-xx1 and here http://dirt.mpora.com/news/the-story-of-the-sram-xx1-drivetrain.html

Wheels are strong how because there is new sizes coming out? most are 142mm wide with a 12mm axle.

Pete . . . . . Happy cycling  8)

Hi All,
Here is a little low down on 1 X 11 http://youtu.be/mAxBg_6cDqI

But Note they are not talking about 1 X 11 on Touring Bike's in this Video! the Head Designer that was at the Sram night I was at (in this Video "Chris") said they are looking to sale this to cycle tourist because it's so simple and strong.

I'm looking forward to see more along this line of design?

Pete..

What an interesting video, Pete; thanks very much for posting the link to it. I have now watched it three times, and many of my initial questions has been answered as a result. I don't think it is ideal for my needs, but I can now see its appeal for certain types of riding and I appreciate the thought behind it.

I love learning about new approaches such as this. I have a number of reservations, but that doesn't mean I think it is a bad idea across the board. Rather, I think it would be ideal for some uses such a cross-country and downhill.

I'm not so sure about touring -- and especially for remote touring -- due the lack of field inventory in relatively remote locations. The system relies on some recent standards that may not have made their way to all outlets, and that could make for dicey parts availability. Coming from the days when a cog board was one of my most valued possessions for custom-building my own freewheels cog-by-cog, I worry that wearing out a single cog would require replacement of the entire one-piece billet cassette...but really, that has been the case for many years now and individual cogs are no longer available. For this reason, many cassettes are riveted together, amounting to the same outcome as this SRAM one-piece cassette.

I'll be following this with great interest, Pete. I can see some ready applications in the e-Bike market where a BB-mounted motor is employed. For that, the single chaining and wide-range cassette might well be ideal in hilly country.

All the best,

Dan.

Hi Dan,
It's not all that new! if you look at the Derailleur it is of a design dating from way back in the 1960's!

The Cassette takes over 3 hour's from start to finish to make just one of them! it's made from Cr Mo steel (apart from the 42T sprocket!)

On tour you can take two front ring's (say a 28 and a 34 etc?) the new chain is one of the strongest made so far!

I tired out tonight the 1st XO1 powered bike to come into work (my Boss's new MTB) a short ride I'll have to wait for my new bike to try out on a long ride?  :)

E-Bike's? no not this set up! after all an E-Bike is just a small motorbike! and back over 100 year's ago people start fitting motor's to bicycle's to help go faster! The 1st Motorcycle's! it's not new just coming around again  ::)

Pete

P.S. I'm looking forward to changing "Tom" into a full touring bike set up again  8)
