If I can get 10.000 miles from a chainring I'm satisfied, will see.
My lx crankset may have been a fluke.
Replaced it with an all steel deore set, that one will last a long time.

>>>As for the naughty gear combos well its definatly at you own risk.  As you are probably aware the minium 'alowed' gear rario is 40:17 or 42:17 for a tandum. <<<

40x17 is ok but not perfect.

>>>If you are a Olimpic fit 120Kg rider then ovously goinging to generate more force into the hub that if you are a 65Kg occasional rider.<<<

Afraid I'm closer to 120kg than I'm to Olympic fit.

>>>At the end of the day it is you that is paying the cash so you will have to decide on this one!  There are riders out there that do use the naughty combos there is also at least one story on the web of someone who managed to shear a drive pin by using a naughty combo.  (Anyone know where this quote is - I know I have read it but cant find the details)ils)<<<

38x17 would be fine but since it's allready not waranty covered I'll go one step further.
36x17 ideal 11th gear is too tempting.
The ultra low 15.4 (about 20x34) is overkill but still nice to have in reserve.
And I don't need a top gear over 80 inch that often.
You gotta take a risk now and then.

I'm using 36x16 and it works very well for my circumstances - hauling 30kg up steep hills in Oz - I've never been caught out, and the hub preforms perfectly.
