A remarkable buy, for sure!

Looking closely at the photos, I do see (just as general caveats):

• They do appear used, with insertion wear on the reaction arm and axle ends.
• Some mild corrosion on the drain plug in the one photo.
• Evidence the one of the hubs shown in the photo has been laced into a wheel (spoke-tracks on the flanges).
• Older model with triangular shifter (and black numbers), sticker instead of laser-etched.
• No packaging.
• No warranty.
• Not all photos seem to be of the same example.

Given the generally indestructible nature the hub, and the assembly of many popular options in one place (including EX shift-box!), these hubs (there's more than one on offer!) seem a pretty good deal.

For those looking for similarly good deals on "loose" Rohloffs, eBay Germany has some astonishingly low prices as well.

Lots of customizing parts -- like colored bolt kits -- available, too. Even some custom builds: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Rohloff-Speedhub-8026-CC-DB-OEM-Disc-rot-29er-oder-26-diverse-Ausfuhrungen-/370565559153?pt=Sport_Radsport_Fahrradteile&hash=item56476db371

To add to what Dan's said, it looks like pretty old stock looking at the serial number in the photo, 032085 means it was produced around November 2003. I have deduced this from the following info taken from Santos's web site:

Modifications
Below is an incomplete list of modifications that Rohloff has performed over the years.

Date from, Serial number and Modification

October 2002
13000
A seal under the axis ring so that no oil leaks.

October 2004
16500
Bracket plate screws provided with sealant, so the screws do not loosen and no oil leaks around the threads.

January 2003
18200
Gear spring changed so that less force is required when changing gear. This is also called soft index.

February 2003
21000
Axis ring gets 5 instead of 6 screws. This makes it easier to replace the cable in the internal switch mechanism.

Mid 2003
Plastic seal replaced with a metal ring - better sealing of the hub.

October 2003
25500
O-ring under the screw of the gear box – no longer vibrates loose and is easy to turn by hand..

End 2003
43000
Spoke holes changed from 2.5 to 2.7mm. This makes it easier to stick the spokes into the hub.

Summer 2004
45000
Cover screws are fastened with Loctite. This prevents loosening of the hub casing when used with disc brakes.

Spring 2006
n.v.t.
Gear Cable Easy Set, easier replacement of the 0.9 mm cable in the internal gear shifting mechanism.

Spring 2007
60000
Screw threads of the sprockets are changed. This makes it easier to loosen the screws during replacements.

Mid 2007
The arrow on the gear shifter is indicated in silver, making it more visible.

Sept 2007
±76.000
The serial number is laser cut instead of just a sticker. The newest hub to leave in September had serial number 76,728 and was lasered.

Jan 2008
±80.000
The black sticker on the Rohloff hub is no longer used and has been replaced by a lasered Rohloff name. I think it looks a bit more chic. It may take a while before this is also done on the bikes themselves.

Sept 2008
100.000
The hundred thousandth Rohloff hub is a reality. Sometime in 2009 the first bikes will be delivered with a serial number above one hundred thousand. Also, the red colour is replaced by red anodizing. The previous red colour flaked off over time ;-)

I think the serial number is up to 160000 as of early 2013.

Pretty old stock from the serial number in the photo...
Ah, but well broken-in!  :D

Nice work, Mac, and a well-found, Andy; thanks.

Seeing things like this makes me think a used Rohloff might make a nice "someday" replacement for the half-step, 15-sp drivetrain (13 available combos) on my rando bike. Nearly identical ratios, long life, and a way to keep the delightful old frame going. Of course, the dropouts would have to be spread, a chainstay torque arm and a tensioner fitted, but it would surely keep the old boy on the road.

Best,

Dan. (...who has dangerous Roadie Dreams of the "perfect" 28-speed Rohloff half-step in a fast, light bike)
