Zac 19 vs Grizzly

Hello:

How do these two compare? No info on the web or on this forum.

According to Thorn Nomad's catalog, Zac 19 is middleweight and Grizzly is lightweight.

The latest Ryde catalog gives the following weights: both rims 26", double-eyelets
Zac 9: 545 gms
Grizzly: 540 gms

Are there other differences?

It is a tricky question, you may find people who have used one of these products but to find someone who has used both is a little harder to find.

What are you looking for in a rim, what type of riding do you do, how many miles a year do you do.

I am no expert, so decided to go by the rims used in Thorn's trekking bikes.
Do not need the really heavy duty rim--so ruled out Andra 30.
That leaves Zac 19 and Grizzly, without CSS.

While Thorn's catalog says they have different weights, Ryde's latest catalog lists them at similar weights.

Knowledge of any other differences should help me narrow down.

Heavy rider, no load, smooth to rough roads, hopefully a few 1000 kms a year.
Looking for reliability and then performance.

Hi Anga!

Sorry you were neglected; thanks for the little nudge.

I'm afraid my Sherpa and Nomad both used Rigida Andras. I was/am very happy with that choice for expedition touring, but they are very heavy rims for more standard uses.

My other bikes predate current rim offerings and include a variety by Ukai, Araya, Mavic and even Alex that are no longer available. I have not personally owned the Zac19 or Grizzly rims.

I can report a Dutch pal has put a lot of distance into his Zac19s and is still very pleased with them. I have seen them firsthand and know them to be a quality rim. For reference, he weighs 86kg, his bike weighs 17kg, and he carries as much as 28kg while touring for an all-up weight of 131kg/288lb. He's found the Zac19s to be both reliable and durable and has yet to go through the brake-track wear indicators, despite many uses in Dutch rains and a round-trip to Santiago de Compostela.

All a bit vague, which is why I didn't answer right away, but hopefully something in the above will prove helpful.

I think either the Zac19 or Grizzly would suit your needs nicely, but I'd probably lean toward the Zac19s because I've seen them and a friend has had good luck with them.

I just looked on the Ryde website and you are correct there is not much of a difference in weight, but there is a difference in profile.

The Grizzly has a braking surface of 13.5 mm and a total depth of 21.8mm and is single eyelet.  Available in black.

The Zac 19 has a braking surface of 10.1 mm and a total depth of 17..5mm and can be purchased as either single or double eyelet.  Available in black or silver.

If you look at the profile the Zac looks stronger but this is based on “looks stronger”, I have no evidence to back that statement up.

So I would tend to agree with Dan and say there is not much between them, personally I would go for which ever matches your budget the best.

Are you going to build your own wheel of get someone else to do it, I see that starbike in Germany has the Zac 19 for 19.99 euros each which is a bargain.

Thanks guys. Just checked SJS cycles and Grizzly is 60 gms lighter than ZAC 19 but significantly more expensive.
Will have to get the wheels built--buying rims first.

Another economy rim that may be worth considering is the Sputnik I have these in their 40 hole rim on my Nomad and they have faired very well in tems of durability.

Thanks Peter--those are the same weights in their catalog.
Must be the latest rims.

The earlier Grizzly seems to be lighter by 60gms.
