Thanks for your techological perseverance James, that makes your invention clear enough and I can see how it would make things much easier! 

Unfortunately, for us RST owners, it wouldn't work as there simply isn't the clearance beneath for the forks for any other solution than attaching the mudguard itself directly to the fork itself!

Post Script - don't bother with the SKS safety caps to fit on the end of the mudguard stays - they are a total nightmare to fit.   Just focus on getting the stay lengths absolutely right, which appears to be SJS policy when fitting out new bikes.
