Half link ?
« on: January 13, 2008, 08:12:20 pm »
Hi all I've just read about something called a half link on a thread on this site that sjs sell.
I think I may need one of these in the near future as if I try to take out a full link the chain becomes too short.
I'm using a 40x17 set and the moment and the adjustment is all used up.
Can anybody explain about the half link as I have never heard of one before.
Only just got into the the Rohloff way of biking. Its great.

Cheers all.

It's pretty much as described, a link that is half as long.  It achieves this by having bent plates so a wide roller attaches to a narrow one.  Here's a picture;

I'd try removing a full link first, it could be enough.

Could I just use my Chain-Rivet tool to attach this to my SRAM chain that came with my Raven Tour ?

Yes, it would replace a full (1") link using the same pins.
Just be sure to get the right width, most are 1/8th for use on single speed chains.  If you're using a more common 3/32" chain you'll need the less common 3/32" link.  I got mine from Ebay. I don't need it for my Raven but it allows me to keep the EBB in the central position which I prefer.
