26 to insure Catalyst
« on: December 13, 2007, 11:06:46 PM »
Just been advised to start a new topic as all the others have not been contributed to for over 120 days. How does it know? Hardly a Simple Machine, Deep Thought more like.

A humbly submitted bike insurance recommendation. I insured my Catalyst (as a named item) to the value of 2000 with my Sainsbury's Home Insurance for a mere 26.

The terms of the cover are very comprehensive including theft of locked bike whilst out and about. We live in an area of high insurance premiums (south Brum). Though we have elected to pay a voluntary excess of 100 to reduce our premiums paying it would reduce the cost of any claim on the insurance not only on the bike.

It took some finding and seems pretty unique so get in there before they wake up to their generosity.

It is a great pity that specialist cycle insurers can't offer better premiums. I'd much rather support a company with a sound cycling pedigree.

I appreciate that bike insurance is a limited market and that bikes are frequently lifted, factors that put large companies in a better position to offer reduced premiums (there are a limited number of underwriters, however). Surely it must be possible for cycle specific insurers to do better than the 220+ I was quoted.

It seems that unless you need mass start race specific, roadside recovery or public liability cover, putting the bike on the home contents is the best bet.

Cheers, James

Definitely and if you change insurance companies for the new customer discounts, every year you will save a fortune. Happy to stay with NFU myself as I can't be bothered going through the small print.
