I tried several different locations for the Rohloff shifter on my bike, happiest with it using the Hubbub adapter to mount it on the handlebar end.  But I have used bar end shifters on bikes for decades so it is natural for me to reach down to the bar end to shift on derailleur bikes, so perhaps that is why I like that option the best.

I do not recall the details, but I think I bought the longer version of the adapter and had to cut it down to length.

One thing I like about that position for the shifter is if I am going really slowly over difficult terrain or climbing a hill slowly, I can have both hands on the handlebars far from the stem for better ability to steer while I also have one hand on the shifter.
