Wheel bearings

Good evening
I have noticed I've got play in the wheel. It's the same symptoms as worn bearings in a traditional cup and cone wheel, but without any graunching or notchiness. Is it likely to be the bearings or something else entirely? Is it possible to change these myself or is it a "send it back to Bridgwater" type of problem?

I am hesitant to say this because it is so obvious, but have you checked that your skewer is tight? 

This is a Thorn forum, so it generally is assumed people own a Thorn, but if this is not a Thorn bike and your bike has rear dropouts that are adjustable, are those adjustment plates firmly fixed and not loose?

If it is the hub, then it's a service centre job, there's no user serviceable parts inside.
Well not officially anyway, there's some people who've had a go, I've seen a youtube of someone doing a complete strip, but it certainly isn't for the faint hearted!

You're quite correct to double check these things.
Although my bike isn't a Thorn (it's a Dave Yates custom built MTB) it's got standard fixed dropouts.
Looks like I'll be e-mailing SJS for prices etc for them to check it out.
