Internal Hub Cable Replacement (Rohloff part# 8271)
« on: January 30, 2019, 07:54:25 am »
Hi

This question is directed mostly at my fellow Raven owners out there.  With 20,000 Km coming up it is apparently time to replace the internal hub cable.  I have the SJS kit 7776 (Rohloff part number 8271) and installation instructions but although I've searched on the 'net for a video on replacing the cable I can't seem to find one.  Does one exist and if so does anyone have a link ?  If anyone has been through this process could they give me some pointers ?  I guess I should also think about changing the shifter cables at some point although there seem to be a number of videos on how to do this.

Thanks
Jean-Marc

JeanMarc,

These videos should see you right:

Hi Dan

Thanks for those links.  Unfortunately, I have just the cable kit, ie not the easy change kit (my hub has a lower serial number than required) nor the entire axle ring kit.  There is a particular technique for winding the cable around the axle ring that I would hope to see on video (if such a video were to exist).

It is a bit fiddly when you are starting with just the cable. See p99-100 of the rohloff service book https://www.rohloff.de/fileadmin/user_upload/Manual_2017_11_web_En.pdf

Points to note are making sure you have the pulley the right way up (the notch on the inside is important -see fig 15).  Use an allen key to hold the pulley while wrapping the cable around (I clamp the allen key vertically in a vice).  When you have the cables in the grooves have a cable tie ready (and ideally someone else) to temporarily secure around the cables to stop them springing everywhere.   Use the instructions to add the pegs, concertina tubes and male bayonet fittings.  Grease, then put the assembly into the mounting, be careful not to unravel the cable and remove the temporary cable tie while using the pegs to secure it in position.

Good luck, it just needs some patience (or order an easy kit!)

It all looks terribly fiddly.  We head back to SE Asia in a week's time for a couple of months worth of easy cycling and if all goes to plan we will be cycling through the UK in May.  We plan to pass through Bridgwater so I am considering just hanging in until I can hand it over to Dave Whittle and his crew at SJS.  We will only do about another three to four thousand kilometers between now and then and shifting is not yet overly stiff so hopefully it can wait until then.  I carry the spares with me so if it all goes wrong I should be able to replace it along the road.

Yes it is a bit fiddly and ideally not something to do on the road.  If you are passing SJS I would definitely get them to help. The easy kit with the cable already on the pulley is probably worth having as a spare.
