Thorn 853c Fork on a MK.3 Audax?
« on: August 09, 2018, 07:56:08 pm »
Good Evening,

I have an Audax Mk3 (not R) which I have had millennium carbon forks fitted to since build (I still have the new original steel forks which are probably between the ST 700 low loader fork and the MK4 700c fork).

Not keen on the feel of the ITM Millennium, so my question is, should I just use the standard steel fork or is the new 853 that much comfier?
The bike is for long rides, I have other Thorns for load carring, so comfort is a priority. The cost is £270 plus fitting, which obviously I would rather not spend but I do value comfort in my advancing years! Do you think it is worhthwile?
Has anyone carried out a similar upgrade?

Thank you in advance (and sorry for being a duffer!)
Matt

I have 853 fork on my Audax Mk3R, fitted at build in December 2017.

A v comfortable bike on variety of surfaces, but nothing to compare it with. My Sherpa also has 853 forks, again v comfortable,  no wrist / hand ache which has been a problem on most previous bikes.

Matt, you’re not a duffer - you’ve got more than one Thorn😉

John is there really a big difference between the 853 forks and the standard ones? I was going to get the 853 for but realised my bike was getting overbudget so had to go for Thorn’s own forks.

I think you’re right Anto. I was only going by what Andy said about the 853 forks in the Thorn brochure when I decided I wanted them. In the end I couldn’t justify the cost and I’m very happy with the ones I’ve got. Having said that, if I had loadsa money😉

It’s steal all the time for me. More forgiving than carbon.

Cheers,

Those 853 were purchased after a build. I am very pleased with them.
