When new, I thought that 7th gear sounded much like a washing machine going up hills. Some 3000mi (5000km) later it's much quieter, but still louder than other gears.

I became less concerned about the noise in 7th when I realised that it has higher efficiency than 5th (the least efficient gear) so the noise is just that, noise. Not dramatically effecting your ride.

I do tend to use 7th as the intermediate step between 8th and 6th however. I don't linger in it too long.

G'Day from Downunder,
As with most, my freehub got quiet after a bit of work. It is now 9 years old - moderate work.
I have noticed, when the chain/sprocket/chainwheel approach old age, that some strange noises can follow a chain clean, but these always go when the offending old gear is replaced. Enjoy your freehub. Greywolf - Australia

It's to remind you that you are cycling with a quality gear box.  The Alfine 8 & 11 are silent (well mine are) if you desire a stealth bike !

has anyone noticed hubs making more noise when pushed backwards? its like a metal fluttering, perhaps the card in the spokes as other have said! hub's now over two years old, could it be a sign of low oil?
