« on: July 16, 2017, 06:19:56 pm »
SOLD

Selling this bike for my dad who purchased it in 2002 from St John Street Cycles. Very little used (a handful of very short rides, no
touring) so no damage or scratches.

Bikebuild is X Thorn XTC with S&S couplings. Upgrades as itemised on the invoice include Shimano M751 XT chainset, XT 26" wheel transmission kit, AVID brakes and bar end shifters and Schmidt dyno hub.

Also included are front and rear carriers, Carradice front and rear panniers (28l and 48l respectively), front bag with klickfix and rackbag.

Looking for offers around £900.
Located in Cardiff, viewing welcome, collection preferred.

Our very own Sage of Oregon provided a sizing matrix for XTC et. al. here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010309203941/http://sjscycles.com/26solobrochure/solobrochurewebp18.htm

If a frame number is forthcoming you can get the tape measure out. Might be a '57'?

Lovely bike for a grand tour..and you get lots of Carradice too!

I agree, I have been looking at the head tube and it looks quite a large frame to me unless the geometry was very different in 2002.

@in4

I'm not 100% sure, but if the bike is from 2002 then the following brochure might provide a more accurate size guide:

http://web.archive.org/web/20060321060909/http://www.sjscycles.com/thornwebsite/thornpdf/ThornxTc853BroHiRes.pdf

I have an xTc of a similar age (2003) and the wheelbase is longer than all but the largest frame in the size matrix you provide, despite being a much smaller bike, e.g. having a much shorter seat tube and standover. This makes me think that the size matrix shows dimensions for the older xTc classic, which has a short wheelbase. (Also, my frame number is 93, which is later than any frames that are listed.)

@Twinklethecat

For what it's worth, my bike is a fillet brazed 725 xTc, so is slightly older than the brochure that I posted. On the underside of my bottom bracket shell there are two numbers, one stamped below the other. The lower two-digit number is the frame reference. In my case this is 93, which would put it as a 525L in the 853 brochure. However, the first three digits of the top stamp are 530, rather than 525, so it seems that the frame number is most helpful for identification. (Thorn's Dave Whittle has confirmed that my bike is a 525.) In my case, the final 3 to 4 digits of the top stamp give the month and year of the build.

Cheers.

Ok everyone, I've had a chat with my dad about the size. He thinks the frame was custom made for him! He can't see any number on the frame but I've rechecked the invoice and found the following reference: Thorn XTC 2002 bare metal frameset 590M/L (97)Option 8 Satin Black Powder Coat NO GRAPHICS S+S.

My tape measuring gave me a standover height of 81cm and reach of 55cm. He was 6'1 with an inside leg of 33" at the time of ordering.

I would be very interested in the bike if the sizing was right.
The frame looks bigger than the measurements you have taken and the measurements you have made would be for quite a small frame for a man of over 6 feet tall.
Are you measuring as per the picture on the last page of the brochure re the XTC which someone posted the link to above?

I measured the bike without having seen a geometry chart or brochure and before I started researching this brand/type of bike. All my dad gave me was the invoice. Thanks to the link posted here I have looked at the chart and noted that the measurements are just slightly under those given for the XL frame with medium/long top tube. Apologies though, I've noticed I wrote down tube instead of seat tube, maybe that's why the measurements seemed strange! So to confirm:

Top tube: 60cm C-C
Seat tube: 52cm C-C / 54cm C-T
Standover: 81cm (This was approximately measured from a point in front of the saddle where one would stand.)
Reach: 55cm
Bars: 44cm

Bear in mind that these are measurements I took with a tape measure and are only as accurate as I could make them - they are not official or documented by the manufacturer.
I did not measure the bb height, the wheel base or the standover height from the head tube. I will ask my dad to remeasure and include these.

Thanks for your interest, hope this info helps!
