External Cable Box Question
« on: May 04, 2017, 01:07:41 pm »
Yesterday I noticed, on my wife's bike I don't have a Rohloff):, that the barrel adjusters were kind of loose or not snugged up.
Where should they be?
Thanks!

The indexing of the Rohloff is all internal so kind of loose is just right. You should be able to wiggle the shifter 1/4 to 1/2 way to the next gear. As long as you can shift through all 14 gears it's all good.

I install the cables on my Rohloff Moulton tight the first time and it made the twist grip a bit harder to turn.  When I got my Thorn, with the cables more loose straight from how SJS set it up I was surprised and delighted by the much nicer, easier shifting. I then re-ran the cables on the Moulton and was happier with it though it was never as slick as the Thorn - a factor I put down the the less elegant and efficient cable routing of the Moulton.

So I'm in full agreement with RonS.  :)

If the cables are too tight, you are more likely to shift into a position in between gears, which does not work so well.
