I read about this on another thread but I didn't REALLY understand it. I've now got it....Clever thinking....I like it..... :)
It really is a good idea. I have attached a little photo collage I used to show students in my bike-repair classes why....

The stays are also stiffer because the mid-fork attachment is closer so they're shorter. The lack of Seku-Clips makes for a stiffer mount as well.

Best,

Dan.

[Apologies for showing part of one of my non-Thorn bikes to make the point. This brand has not been in production for a couple decades and so is not a competitor.]

Hacksaw (with new blade) and a small vice, just done it !
I had a blue Centurion years ago gave it to my son when he went to University.  It got nicked on his fifth day.  Never saw it again. (Honestly Dan)

I use an old pair of cable cutters that no longer cleanly cut cables, but they work well for cutting stays, wear eye protection though as the cut end flies off into the bushes at a fair speed.

I recently fitted new SKS Bluemels and used an old set of pliers that had a cable cutting edge. Clamped them where I wanted to cut the stays and hammered the plier jaws with a hammer. A few hacksaw cuts each side into the indentations allowed the unwanted metal to be broken by simply bending the wire stays back and forward a few times. Finally filed the rough edges off for a smooth finish.
