Changing the front wheel with a SON 28 dynamo hub?
« on: September 09, 2016, 01:33:26 pm »
Hey everyone, I'm just making sure i'm about to do this correctly and make sure i'm not about to do something stupid - better safe than sorry right?

I don't have a puncture or anything but thought I'd make sure I know what I'm about before heading off on my next tour. Thankfully I had no punctures during my first one! Was only 500 miles round the north of scotland though.

So the hub obviously has a wire coming off it, and it would be impossible to remove the front wheel for repair without detaching the wires. Do i go ahead and simply pull these off/out?

link to what i'm confused/making sure of! Thanks everyone!

Yes, pull gently but firmly on each connector to detach; don't pull on the wires themselves.

Reattach the wires by sliding the connectors onto the Schmidt hub's spade connectors.

Both operations can require surprisingly high amounts of force with a new hub and connectors. Some of us have fitted secondary connectors for this reason; they can make removal a bit easier. See:

...and...

In this case, the connectors remain attached to the hub and the wire is "broken" at the secondary connector.

Welcome! Nice to have you with us. The only dumb question is the one left unasked!  ;)

Best,

Dan.

good to know, too, what the hub looks like by itself:

grab that black insulation as close to the axle as you can when you want to disconnect!
