Ortlieb introduce new bikepacking bags
« on: April 15, 2016, 03:29:11 am »
Hi All!

Ortlieb today announced release of a new line of bikepacking products in addition to their usual line of panniers and handlebar bags:

They look promising...I'm wondering if the "handlebar roll" could be pressed into service as a sort of faux Carradice for use beneath a saddle. Hmm. Possibilities there, but it might be only by chance the straps spacing would match Brooks saddle loops.

Best,

Dan.

I did not expect Ortlieb to venture into this market.  Interesting.

Another link.

Before I bought my Nelson Longflap, I gave a little bit of thought to one of these.

Interesting that Ortlieb is offering of a waterproof saddle bag that runs fore and aft, but with a completely different mount and design than the Carradry bag.  I will stick with my Nelson Longflap.  Where I go, I do not need to worry about the sides of the bag hanging up on a tree to my side.

Since I use drop bars, I think I am locked into a handlebar bag that is narrow enough to fit.  The bikepacking bags would never work for me.  On my recently built up rando bike (a non-Thorn), I can fit the handlebar bag but it is tight.  See first photo.

Frame bags are pretty hard to size when virtually every different bike has different triangle geometry.  I wonder how many frame bags they will offer for different sizes and shapes?  I will stick with my cheapo framebag that I got off Ebay for my Nomad, I got lucky with an exceptional fit, third photo.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a bikepacker.  But with a suspension fork on my Nomad, I was looking for additional places to put stuff since I only had rear panniers on the bike.  I did not want to have unsprung weight on the front.

I expect that Ortlieb will sell a lot of these, as the other competitors like Revelate Designs are not inexpensive so there is some room in the higher quality area for such products.
