Map Holder Recommendation
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:38:37 pm »
Hi Folks

I am looking for a recommendation for a waterproof map holder that will fit on Thorn comfort bars, once I remove all the gadgets.

I already have a Carradice handlebar bag, but if I take that I will just fill it full of weight.  The plan being to fit an accessory bar and put the lights etc. on there, so I am just looking for something simple yet robust that someone here has experience of.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,
I bought one of these mini map holders from SJS a couple of years ago and has proved to be very useful. I put my maps in an Ortlieb clear map case - 100% waterproof and grippy to the case tso won't fall out. The case fits my comfort bars no probs and comes off easily for storage for touring days.

all the best
Eddie

That's an interesting way of doing it Eddie.  I shall give that some though.  Thank you.

HI
I read the reviews, it says hard to fit and remove (steel strap), i use one of these for holding a crank bros pump to the back of the seat tube on one of my bikes, cut them down to the size you need, it only takes seconds to fit or remove them
very useful bits of kit for strapping things to the bike, careful how tight you do them up though as they can crush a carbon fishing rod butt
thought they might be of use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Breakaway-Nylon-Coasters-PAIR-Tough-Universal-Reel-Mounting-Device-/171479640849?pt=UK_BOI_Packing_Postal_Supplies_Labels_LE&hash=item27ecfbab11

Another user of the Rixen-Kaul holder with an Ortlieb map case here.
Do not believe anyone that says they are hard to fit and remove - I am constantly moving mine between my Nomad and a Brompton!

Hi,
Excellent use of the Bromton to warm others of the road ahead  :)
Noticed you have a rather nifty looking water bottle cage there. Have you welded or drilled the frame to accept the cage bolts?

all good

It's  Steve Perry modified B, so welded in cage bolts - there is another set on the stem as well.

Hi Folks

I still haven't moved forward on this, but wanted to ask if by Ortlieb map case, you mean this one: -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ortlieb-Waterproof-Map-Case-Height/dp/B001CZ7L40

I have bought a Garmin Touring GPS, and a load of maps so far, trying to whittle down the options to the best.

I've used that map case to hold an iPad mini, which worked great until you wanted to remove it. It also gets in the way of accessing the handlebar bag.

I've now gone to a separate holder and case from Lifeproof, which is very well made, but EXPENSIVE.

The Ortlieb bag I got is a lot smaller. Kind of folded OS map size, A5 in fact, just saw one online at Blacks.

all good

Thanks a lot for the advice folks.  The mini-map arrived today.  Certainly a robust chunk of perspex.  I will get the map case next.
