Title: "USA" alphabetically in front of "United Kingdom"
Post by: ian__white@hotmail.com on December 03, 2003, 02:58:06 pm
I have just registered with this forum
and in doing so I have entered details of
city and country.

The country is selected from a pull-down list
that appears initially at least to be sorted alphabetically

Except that is until you get to the "U"'s
where you discover that, after "Tuvalu" comes:

USA
Uganda
Ukraine
United Aram Emirates
United Kingdom
Uruguay
Uzbekistan
Vanuatu

Can someone either explain this "anomaly" and preferably fix it

Or I shall have to abandon this forum in protest
at this "American" bias

Harumph ;-)

Ahhh, seems logical to me...

the software is American made.

Of course I have no idea so I am speaking purely out my arse.

This could be to do with ASCII code - upper case being sorted before lower case.  I haven't checked so could be wrong.  In any case, my home nation is not included in the list.

How long would the list need to be to include every nation on earth, including those no one realises are separate nations?[?]

USA is an initialised abbreviation. As such, they are always listed first in most dictionaries, (Under their appropriate letter of course). Could this be why it appears before Uganda etc.?
