Title: Where are we all ?
Post by: femmcommuter on March 25, 2004, 10:47:48 pm
Well this is a slow site, why not start a thread as to where we are all playing on computers at the moment i.e where in the www are we  [?] (that is the whole wide world).

Cardiff here! [:p] Centre of the universe [;)]

Maybe we would like to say that Thorn cyclists are so involved in cycling that we never have time to sit in front of a computer chatting to other cyclists.
Does that work?

Or that most of the people subscribed spend so much time on the C+ forum, that they have little energy left for this one???

Paris - and I would rather be in Lancaster.  I must have been really bad in a past life - and what makes it worse is that people constantly say how lucky I must be to live in Paris - this is from people who have only seen it in pictures or who have been there for a week or two holiday (which is actually about the right length of time)

Only know of one Thorn owner here in Sheffield, sadly it's not me.

BTW Pedaldog, have we met? There can't be many Thorn owners in Lancaster. Was that you at Wray Castle campsite on Windermere about 3 years ago? Do you have a very nice Nomad and a taste for bacon butties?

Hello... I am in Santa Monica along the coast at the edge of Los Angeles California... I am buying, on lay a way (time payments, THEY keep the bike till paid) a used Thorn Nomad from a used bicycle store near me.... So I now consider myself a Thorn rider..... They are VERY rare in these parts... nobody even knows what they are.  but when they look at the one in the bike store, they see its quality...  I am very excited to be getting it... a gift from God...
my name is Rory.   [:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][:I]

I no longer have a Thorn, having just sold the last Nomad of the three I bought!
I am now concentrating on Recumbents and mainly three wheels. Hope I don't get banned from here!

A small village near Abergavenny. I've logged into the forum today to post in the "was it you section" 'cos last night I went to get my Raven and there was another one chained up next to it! First time I've seen two together for over a year (and that was in the shop!)

Swindon.  Just about to go and do some turbo training on my Nomad.  I know it's like using a Ferrari for muck-spreading, but the racing bike has rather fragile tyres, the the track bike can't be clamped up as it doesn't have a QR, and the MTB has knobblies.

I'm doing the Dunwich Dynamo on it this year though.

Hi

Im from Hayes In Middx.

I have two Sherpas well I have one with another on order.
Great Bike very shore footed as I am a tall Guy and the wheels are holding out well (700 have been a problem with me) I am percale sighted so the wheels have to be strong as I do hit most holes in the road !!!!!

The one I use at the moment is for Audax and Sunday club riding (CTC WEST MIDS)
It’s done around a 1000 miles now with no problems.

I have completed 4 Audax this year The best one so fare being the 10 Thames   bridges Very nice run I recommend it.
I’m planing to do the  London to Brighton and London to Southland this year to

The one I have on order is going to be my long distance truer
I’m thinking of a trip to India on it may be next year. And I am hoping to do the end to end on it next year as well.
It’s a bike that I have refined to what I will need on my long trips
Like longer cranks, Lights and good front and back quality racks.

I also have a Thorn  Tandem. Again No problems with it only I cant find any one that wishes to come out on it so I’m considering selling it soon.

Be Good

Graham

Erie (no, not eerie) Pennsylvania USA

Had to have a Rohloff to handle the daily commute (rain, slush, snow, ice, thunder, lightning, wind, crazy drivers, whatever).  I asked my bike shop to build something for me.  When I showed him the Raven Tour on the web he said, 'No way can I build something like that.  Buy it!'  So I did.  What a great bike.  All the guys at the bike shop had to take it for a spin.  I don't expect to see another Thorn, let alone a Raven, in these parts.

I have recently finished building up my Thorn Raven (sport). Mainly used for my commute to work. - Over the top of Cefn Bryn, past King Arthur’s Stone and down along the Loughor estuary marsh road - a beautiful ride on Gower (South Wales) that I get to ride twice a day.

I'm in Ullapool, Wester Ross; haven't been cycling for 9 years, after my old Jack Taylor finally wore out the bottom bracket threads. Then last November, started to regret that the Mrs's "Les Bryant" (tourer using a road race frame, 1975, Norwich) wasn't being used, and found Thorn's on the internet - got a Club Tour, most like the bikes I was used to (but now strongly tempted by Raven Sports Tour, can't really justify 2 bikes!).  Commuting about 1 hilly mile 4 times a day, looking forward to trips in spring, but we've just had a week of snow here. Great scenery here, but no country lanes - only main roads.

Another Scottish raven (sport) tour here in Fife, between Dalgety Bay and Burntisland, if you like mapping i'm right on the coastal path at sea level in Aberdour, so the only way is up! Still finding my ideal position on my 2 week old bike but very impressed, even more so with a shot on my pals new derailler equipped hybrid last weekend.

I'm up the road in Inverurie (Aberdeenshire).  Trying to finish a literature review for my final year in Physiotherapy.  Keep getting distracted by this and C+ forum and my new Thorn Raven Enduro which keeps begging me to ride it.  Just back from a ride, frustratingly can't go offroad yet because of all the snow here.  Looking forward to summer trails, oh and a job if anyone knows of any basic-grade Physiotherapy posts going...

Cheeky, my "long" training rides are one-way Swindon --> Bedford before lunch (86 miles depending on roadworks), and I've used the Thorn for at least one of them.  The last bit of the route is Stony Stratford-Wolverton-Haversham-Little Linford-Tyringham-Filgrave-Newton Blossomville-Turvey-Carlton-Felmersham.  Because of the mudguards, it's a pain to get the Thorn into a car for the return trip, so I usually take the racing bike.  My record average speed of 18mph for the ride was on the Thorn, although that had more to do with a light tailwind than the bike!

I've been living in sunny Waestern Australia for over 20 years and moved to York (96km east of Perth) for the last seven years. My Thorn Raven Sport Tour has got 1.500km on the clock and it is the best bike I ever owned. I don't think there are too many Thorn bikes in this part of the world. Tomorrow (Good Friday) we start crushing the first olives of the season but guess what I'll be doing first... a nice early 25km ride on deserted country roads before starting up the noisy olive press.

Thorn Raven Tour

1 Year, 1 oil change and 4000km.  Superb, reliable, comfortable machine.  No complaints.

I use it for short rides, commuting, 100K/200k/300K Audax and will soon use it fully loaded on short camping trip.

If you only want 1 bike get one like this.

Well the Thorn rack suggests a weight limit of 55kg, lighter than a supermodel.  I also give mates a lift on it sometimes, coming back from the pub or something

Just wondering how much punishment a Mavic 725 can take?

Sydney, Australia (and the bike and I have just completed a ride from Brisbane to Sydney, over 13days and 1100km).  I adjusted the bottom bracket once as the chain stretched a bit, didn't have one puncture (using Schwalbe Marathon Racer tyres) and only had a couple of near death experiences.  The bike performed flawlessly.

I live in Brisbane (Oz) and have a Thorn Club Tour purchased in 2005 to ride C2C and LEJOG.

Since exporting it here I now ride it on the occasional Audax it and commute 70KM on it 3 days per week

I have to say I haven't seen another Thorn over here as yet, but mine attracts plenty of favourable comments.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I bought a Thorn Nomad Mk 2 frame from SJS Cycles, and most of the components to build it up just the way I wanted it.

Just two weeks ago I saw two travelling Brits touring with Thorn Nomad Mk 1's matt green coloured, heading down to Wilson's Promontory, before travelling to Tasmania. Thorns in Australia are scarce as poultry molars. Anyone from here?

I hope they did not get caught by the recent floods at Wilson's Prom and have to be evacuated  :-\

Almost at the top of the Nile Gorge, Ethiopia, with my trusty Nomad MkII. 1200m and half an hour down,  1400m and 7 hours up the other side! I'm sure plenty of people have got up there much more quickly but I found it bloody hard work.

I'm actually in Addis Ababa now but the Nile Gorge has been by far the biggest challenge in my relatively limited cycle touring experience. Thanks to all on the forum for helping me find such a great touring bike.

Sitting here, recovering from surgery and waiting for my Nomad-ick ... no wait that doesn't sound right  :o life to begin.  Ordered but waiting, is there any marvelous feeling that feels terrible, as bad, since being age six on December 23rd?

Didn't think so! ;D

So, I'm laid up in Selma, North Carolina, USA.  Sitting here looking at my backyard where the tent is layed out (the neighbors must think me dangerously weird), where I like to camp and test out tents and sleeping bags etc, while I wait, and wait.

And so I'm very serious when I say that some of these threads, such as Dan's (http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=2273.msg16261#msg16261)  are like water in the desert.  Planning, planning, thinking, thinking, itching, itching to start pedaling.

Some shots from previous excursions, here in NC.  I've been in North Carolina too long but I do have to admit that it is wonderfully diverse and very beautiful.

No worries, Pavel; they'll come 'round!  ;)

Their curtains have stopped wiggling here'bouts some time ago, though they do openly stare now and then at the guy riding by with a video cam mounted to a painter's pad at the end of a broomstick, the one who did stability tests of homemade trailers at night and found they produced colorful sparks when they noisily turned turtle >:( and who keeps doing Tours de Street with full touring kit as he adjusts the load on his Sherpa, who zooms up and down the street at night to aim his headlight. ??? Probably the same one who laid out in 14F/-10C weather on the concrete back patio in frozen rain to test pads and bags to see if they came near their temp ratings (most did not!; the one that did, stayed) and figure what it would take to get them there.

Wait a minute...that sounds like...me, 'cos it is!  :o They probably figure, "Hmm. Eccentric but harmless". When I finally snap, they'll recall to reporters how I was always such a Quiet Boy growing up in the neighborhood. Never a lick of trouble and then... <shrug> "Something just let loose". ;D Must've been those infernal bicycles that did it.

My backyard looks very like yours, except for the Safety Orange construction fencing around the Tent Testing Facility to keep the neighbor kitties from decorating them. :-X

You're not alone. Welcome to the asylum. You've been assigned to the Waiting For Thorn Unit. ;D We've all been there. It may not be Santa, but he'll soon arrive in the guise of a UPS delivery worker driving a Big Brown truck.

So sorry to hear you're laid-up at present, but hoping you'll feel better soonest. Thorn Arrivals are known to produce amazing recoveries...

All the best,

Dan.

Hi - I'm new to the forum, although I've been 'lurking' for a few weeks now, getting the feel of things.  I'm a UK ex-pat retired 6 years ago to the island of Kefallonia, Greece with my wife, my dog, 12 cats and a tortoise! (all except my wife acquired since we got to Greece!)  I orignally hail from near Newport in South Wales where I spent most of my working life as a police officer.
The reason I have joined this forum is because I hope to expand my passion for mountain biking to include touring.  I have it in my mind to get hold of a Thorn (having done a fair bit of research on all the options) and ride from my daughter's home in Wales, back here to Kefallonia in May/June next year via (still subject to revision of course) France, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Albania and mainland Greece.
I'm finding it all very interesting, and this forum and all of you are helping me along with my plans/dreams - thanks!

Day before yesterday, I rode the Cades Cove Loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/cadescove.htm

It was the Wednesday car-free morning, and I was mostly alone through this beautiful ride.  Coming around a corner on a downhill, one of the local black bears was wandering along the road in front of me.  I applied my front brake,  SQUEEEEEE!  And the bear got off the road, walking along side of me, eyeing me suspiciously.  Whew!

I'll now consider that squeal a "safety feature".

Hi Holly!

What a wonderful ride, and in such a beautiful place! I'm glad you were able to get the time "away" for some special riding, and there's nothing more special than seeing a "BEAR!".

Good thing you had the "squeaky brake" feature, ready to use when you needed it! As we might say in the software world, "That's not a bug; it's an undocumented feature!" -- pretty handy one, at that!

Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Best,

Dan.

I'm residing in and riding around North Bedfordshire.

Not a spectacular place to be but not as flat as may be expected.  Actually, I love cycling around the country lanes here!

I'm moving to Inverurie in July. Not far from Banff?
Would love to meet up and hear about your trip. I plan a long one next year so any touring tips would be appreciated.
I have a Raven. Just back from 4 days around Fort William. Did Ben Nevis. Not on the Raven tho'  ;)

I'm sure it's on here somewhere - I'm in Newcastle (the other one) in NSW, Oz-trail-yah. Close enough to the beach that bicycles (and my precious Toyota Troop Carrier) rust at the slightest provocation.  :'(

I'm coming over to the Old Dart in August for a month, so get ready.  ;D

I saw a test and Vaseline works surprisingly well against corrosion, and Tectyl Superwax.

See: http://www.motorstophelder.nl/anti-corrosie/

Well it's Dutch but the pics speak book chapters as we say down there.

Thanks J.

Much better is a great Ozzie invention made from... sheep grease (lanolin)! (What else? ;)) It's called Lanox:

http://www.inox-mx3.com/inox.htm

and it is fantastic. Not gooey, but won't come off in the rain. Provides just enough protection, and is harmless to all bike materials.

Not sure if it's available up your way, tho...

Cheers,
Sam

There are certainly few on the ground in the Northland, John:  Jim K & I are roughly north-south in Eastern Ontario & the Catskills in NY (with a few days' riding in between!); and Dan, Ron S and David S are far to the west on the Left Coast beyond the mountains.  (There must be a few others, but those are the names I recall in these threads.)
