If your bike could travel at or beyond the speed of light, would your headlights work?
-
Don't be daft the dynamo will burn out at about 50mph.
Seriously though of course they would but you wouldn't be able to see much.
-
No, before you all would be in primeval darkness. Though, behind you, you would surely light up the sky prettily for the rest of us.
-
I only ride in the daytime, Matt, so use only a flashing light (for conspicuity). Only on some steep neighbourhood downhills have I approached the speed of light, and even then, I reckon I was still some way off.
-
According to Einsteinian physics one cannot travel at or beyond the speed of light, but assuming you could reach just short of that, your faithful headlight should still cast a beam ahead of you.
It might require better than my hummingbird cadence to put this to the test, but I'm willing to try. ;D So far I've managed 101kmh/62.74mph on my tandem downhill with a willing partner, so I'm well on my way....
All the best,
Dan.

They don't seem to have a problem on STARTREK (or is it fiction ?)

No...Star Trek is real and takes place in the future when all such problems are resolved. They even have warp drive.
What we see as TV shows and films are really their archives made available through a wrinkle in time. After all, Captain Kirk started each weekly show in the original series with the narrated introduction, "These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise...".
The "Trekkies" we see at conventions are actually marooned red-shirts that got caught in the wrinkle along with the video archives.
It all makes sense now, doesn't it...!
Best,
Dan.

Ah, Dan, if only you knew as much about bicycles as you know about interstellar travel...
-
;D
Someday, Andre, someday.... ;)
All the best,
Dan.

According to Einstein......
Dan.
Quite right Dan, I had forgotten that.
But it reminded me of my dad telling me he had once met Albert.
And his brother, Frank.

I’m pretty sure Frankenstein was an ‘only’ child😎

Dan's reply touches on the laws of physics.
Einstein of course had a word or 3 to say on the subject but it was my grandfather who layed the groundwork.
Here are a few of Newton's lesser known laws.
Law of queue: If you change queues, the one you have left will start
to move faster than the one you are in now.
Law of the Telephone: When you dial a wrong number, you never get an
engaged tone.
Law of Mechanical Repair: After your hands become coated with grease,
your nose will begin to itch.
Law of the Workshop: Any tool, when dropped, will roll to the least
accessible corner.
Law of the Alibi: If you tell the boss you were late for work because
you had a flat tire, the next morning you will have a flat tire.
Bath THEOREM: When the body is immersed in water, the telephone rings.
LAW OF ENCOUNTERS: The probability of meeting someone you know
increases when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with.
LAW of the RESULT: When you try to prove to someone that a machine
won’t work, it will!
LAW OF BIOMECHANICS: The severity of the itch is inversely
proportional to the reach.
THEATRE RULE: People with the seats at the furthest from the aisle
arrive last.
LAW OF COFFEE: As soon as you sit down for a cup of hot coffee, your
boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is
cold.
As you can see, he refers to the bike and telephone proving the point that he was the greatest thinker.

Chapeau.
Now a plug for our Thorn tandem:
Mary and I have maxed out at only 70 km/h ( we spun out long before that) but with four touring panniers the bike was steady as a rock. Magnificent!
