Title: Clunky clicking sound in gears 9, (maybe 10), 11, and 12
Post by: marshall2389 on June 01, 2019, 10:10:36 pm
My Speedhub 500/14 is emitting a clunky clicky sound in gear 9, maybe 10, 11 and 12 when under power. Any ideas? I've got a mid-drive motor. The hub has only 1000 or so miles on it encased in my velomobile shell (so I doubt the gear oil is dirty, although maybe I need more oil).

Thank you for your time.

Velomobile shells tend to amplify sound; bad for annoyance, good for troubleshooting.

Based on the experience of a Dutch friend who has a Rohloff in his velomobile and experienced a similar noise under power, I'd suggest checking whatever you are using for a torque-reaction arm. He had a Speedbone and found the bolts were a bit loose. Applying blue Loctite and retorquing the bolts silenced the noise. Another friend in Germany has the long torque-reaction arm that attaches to the left chainstay well forward of the dropout. It had a loose Rohloff quick-release clevis pin seat. He greased it and all went silent.

In each case, it was something other than the hub internals that caused the noise and it only happened in the higher gears.

Best,

Dan.

I went ahead and tightened the bolt that holds the torque arm. However, the clicking noise stopped after taking off my trailer. I think the weight of the trailer was putting force on the wheel axle and must have been bending the structure of the hub in some way.

Excellent news to find the noise may not be internal to the hub. Hoping the good luck holds.

Best,

Dan.
