Title: Caught it! Wrong chain!!
Post by: Thomas777 on March 26, 2019, 01:04:21 am
Today I was fitting a new Surly chainring in my wife bike. I had installed a new chain last fall after our last trip. But as I was draping it over the new chainring I thought"What an odd fit". Then looking closer I see I had used a 9 speed chain. Not sure how I did it but I am glad I caught it!

Surprised you noticed, it's 0.2mm difference!
It would have worked fine, the chainring and sprocket will both accept 9 speed chains.  One of my Rohloff's has one as it's what I had when I needed it.  8 speed are a little stronger due to slightly thicker outer plates, but the wear on the pins is no different and that's what usually kills chains.
