Title: Chain question??
Post by: Thomas777 on March 16, 2019, 05:45:55 pm
So after I posted about the chainring I did a bit of reading. And a question comes to . What speed chains are the Rohloff sprockets designed for?

They work best with 7/8 speed 3/32" chain, or any specific hub gear 3/32" chain, our favourite being the KMC X1 or X1 EPT.

Last time I changed mine I went for the KMC X1 Rohloff, partly because it's shiny ;)
Just over 8,000 miles and it's used up all the adjustment on the Mercury's mini EBB, that'll do me and I'll probably go for the same again.  I was tempted to take a link out, add a half link and get a few 1,000's more miles, but it's coming up for it's Spring service so I might as well change it now and forget about it.

Do you measure the wear?
0.5-0.75
I use the KMC X1 as well on my Raven. I also have the Chainglider on to protect the chain. I'll check my stats for the time and mileage.
When I bought the X1 I also purchased an EPT one as well.
So that will go on next.
Anyone experience of the EPT?

No, though out of interest I may do when I change it.  I don't subscribe to the idea of changing a chain to prolong sprocket life, when reversible sprockets are £15 and the £35 chainrings last me 2 - 3 chains before reversing, it's hard to see the economic benefit.  The mini EBB on the Mercury reduces the life of a chain, I knew that before I bought it and understand the reasons it's chosen, so it wasn't a deal breaker but it wouldn't have been my choice.
