Title: Thorn XTC
Post by: ridgeback63 on October 24, 2018, 07:42:01 pm
I've got the chance to pick up a lovely example of an XTC,I've read the PDF brochures about it,but I didn't notice anything about a) the seatpost diameter and b) the weight she could carry,I want to use her as a commuter and general runaround to go with my 2 other Thorns, any help is appreciated thanks folks.

lovely bike but to be totally honest your Audax is every bit as good you wont find a big difference.my 2 bikes thorn audax and terry dolan full carbon few hours in  the saddle i don't really find much difference ok climbing hills s a lot easier on the dolan but sure a cyclist doesnt climb hills all the time  ;D ;D

the best way to upgrade a bike is custom wheels and top end tyres .after that get a probike fit you will be amazed at the difference.

thats my  2 cents worth.

Hello,
Seatpost 27.2. Weight carrying?
The XTC is miles away from audax and has 26" wheels a fillet brazed frame and generally more much more comfortable than Audax.
Audax faster but XTC more leisurely akin to a nimble tourer. What size is it? Where is it? If its 'my' size I shall pop over and buy it  ;D ;D ;D
Best,
John

Thanks jags and John, jags I want the XTC as an everyday bike, for going to work on,and getting shopping etc, pulling a trailer to get bags of coal on,I wouldn't fancy using my audax for that, cheers mate,John I've measured her up against my Audax and she is set up more or less the same, saddle is roughly the same.she has been converted to a flat bar and has V brakes fitted and is a lovely red colour,I've put my Genesis Tour de fer up for sale to pay for her and to make room

I've used my XTC cycle/camping and it hasn't grumbled at 25kg, handles very well and good for unloaded days out from the campsites. Hope that helps. Martin

Thanks jags,it's too good to miss, usually I only spend £50.00 to £100.00 on a general bike, but hey every now and again you've got to take a risk eh,that certainly helps Martin, thanks for the info

Just picked her up today jags, needs a good clean and a little bit of fettling, looks to be in superb condition,a few little scratches on the forks but everything else looks great, the numbers underneath the bottom bracket are :LA11  92001 75, I'm guessing that they mean she was made in Sept 2001 but as for the rest I have no idea, any help would be great,I shall get some pictures up soon

Not sure jags, underneath the bottom bracket it says LA11 92001 75,I'll measure it when I can find my tape measure,my Raven is a 565 and this is very close to that

For some inexplicable reason my net provider thinks that webarchive is an adult only site. I therefore can't access it without jumping through hurdles. Aaaaanyway there is a link to the archived xtc brochure on the Thorn general forum page. That should help 're sizing.

Thanks in4,I've come to the conclusion that I have an early 560 long or medium XTC possibly made by LA cycles in Coventry, hopefully Dave Whittle might be along to confirm it

I'm thinking the 75 refers to a frame size. My old Nomad was an L.A. cycles build. It had a frame number 67. Interestingly, it's in India now, as part of a UK to AU tour. Check out Cycleforlove for a good Thorn story
