Title: Identifying Rohloff Gear Cables
Post by: philb0412 on August 16, 2018, 12:19:04 pm
Hello.

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere before. I am rummaging through my box of bike parts. Do Rohloff gear cables have an 'R' stamped on the nipple? I assume they are Rohloff cables but would like to confirm before fitting them.

Thanks, Phil

When you refer to a "nipple" on a gear cable, I assume you mean the end fitting that goes into the shifter.  I do not think I have ever seen a R stamped onto the end of a gear cable.  I think the end fittings that came with my Rohloff were a hexagonal shape, but I am now using generic Shimano type road cables on my Rohoff bike.

Yes, my gear cables had hexagonal nipples, and the cable was 0.9mm. There were dire warnings bout using ordinary cables.  I see now though that SJS seem use shimano road cables which are 1.1mm. I have the original triangular shifter so maybe things have changed.
