Title: Which Pump for 2 x Pump Pegs?
Post by: cpk on November 01, 2017, 10:10:33 am
Hi All,

I've just picked up an older club tour and it's got a pair of pump pegs.

I'd like to find the right pump for it.  I thought a Zefal HPX would fit but it transpires that it doesn't have depressions at one end?

Would a Topeak Master Blaster fit?  Any help is appreciated.  I've googled and searched forums but can't seem to find the information.

Thanks,
Chris

While a pump that fits in the pump pegs looks nice, for most of my riding I prefer to use either a Road Morph G or a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive pump.  These pumps are a minature version of a floor pump similar to the pumps that most of us use at home.  At a different forum I wrote up a comparison of the two pumps that I am citing.

I only average one flat a year, so which pump I carry is not that important for when I am riding near home.  Near home, any pump that will get some air into a fixed flat is adequate.  But bike touring where I may be far from home for weeks, I am more likely to use the pump for periodic fills and then the ease of use and presence of a gauge is more important to me.

Thanks for the reply and explanation.

Unfortunately I don't have the carrying capacity at the moment for a pump like that, I've got a small saddle bag that I use for my trips.

If/when I start doing some proper overnight touring with panniers+rack then I will certainly bare this in mind.  At the moment I'm doing day rides and getting to enjoy the bike.

1. The best pumps with a depression for a nipple at one or both ends are (by reputation -- I've never used either though I've owned both) the HPX that you already know about and the Silca.

2. I carry a pump for the use of riding companions (holding thumbs!). It's the only miniature pump I have experience of that works, the Topeak Peak DX, though it could be bigger for my 60mm tubes, but you get there in the end. Beautifully made, suits both Presta and Schrader valves without changing fiddly components, includes excellent bracket to fit under water bottle, made of aluminium but light enough for a touring pump.

The only one I found that should fit two pump pegs is:

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/pumps/l-zefal-800-presta-pump-black/

I stopped using frame fitting pumps a long while ago, pumps and bottles used to be stolen occasionally from my locked bike.

I have a very small Lezyne mini pump carried with my general-use toolkit. Used rarely, it takes a while to pump fat tyres to a decent (low) pressure. I also have a small, metal tyre pressure guage.

For longer tours I have a "miniature version of a floor pump" with integral guage like Mickeg. Can't remember the model and mark. This gets used for topping up the tyre pressures. When I take this, if I remember I leave the separate tyre pressure guage at home.

At home, like most people I use a track pump.

Recommend Leyzene alloy pumps.
The small ones are pretty good and fix on the bottle cage.
The flexy hose  really helps when inflating tyres.

For longer Tours or less worried about size I use a mini track type pump , which is larger than a mini pump , and very user friendly.
Fits on downtube/ bottle cage.

What is the length between your "lugs" for fixing pump, I may have one suitable in my shed, will have a look.
Although I thinks its more for fitting on lugs on the seat stay and frame of the bike.
Bought it for the Cyclosportif frame.

Thanks for the reply.

The distance between lugs is ~450mm.  The lugs are on the part of the frame from seat to rear hub.

Brilliant , will go and look now!

Got the same lugs on my frame, but the distance between is 400mm , so not sure the pump will fit.

The pump is a Zefal HPx1  recommended by SJS went I bought the frame.

From memory I think the pump does some have adjustment for length, I will have a look but this seems quite a big difference so not sure it will adjust that much.

Pump is now called a Zefal HPX in various sizes.

You need it slightly longer to allow for the pump to compress and spring into position.

SJS should be able to advice and sell them too.

That's great advice.  Thanks for all your help.

I did look at the HPX but dismissed it because I believed it didn't have indentations at one end to fit on the lugs?  I think I need a size 2.

I did email SJS with the details and they said they didn't have any suitable pumps in stock.

One end has an indent for the lug , one end has a sort of "curved end" for neatly fitting into the frame.

I always used a simple Velcro strap as well for additional security , due to once knocking the pump off with my heal of my foot.

great pumps, but I prefer the ones with a hose on now, so rarely use this one now, gets tyres up v. fast to high pressures.

Thanks, that does answer my question!
